We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivier Bassil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Olivier, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was blessed to start music at a very young age. I was only 7 years old when my parents, who were not musicians, enrolled me in the local music school in the Brittany region of France where I grew up. I was very lucky to work with an incredible teacher who honestly had the capacities of one of the greats in terms of performance and composition.

I rapidly learned and ended up in bands as a teenager. But life takes us in certain directions and I ended up in business for a couple years before deciding to get back to my passion. Society tends to push you into the more immediate option to do a 9 to 5 job within an enterprise with the promises of a salary but going for music all the way was the best decision I could have taken.

Having my passion for music at the core carries me through all the challenges every career brings. There never goes a day that I hesitate about whether I’m doing the right thing, and I always experienced these feelings when in other fields.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I started my music career working under 16-Grammy winning producer David Foster. Little did I know, I learned everything there was about not only production but the business of music. One of the chief lessons was that you’re only as great as your network, after which I developed the contacts that became the pillars of my producing career of the past 6-7 years.

I also grew a true desire to bring back the great, legendary sounds of the past few decades. Working with David, I got to watch and help orchestrate sessions with the greatest musicians, symphony orchestras and big bands around some of the most legendary artists. I believe that this quest for quality and a certain old school taste are part of my brand today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

LA is a driving city but being European, I love hanging out in areas where walking is an option. The Grove and The Americana are regular stops for me, I also love how much I get to feel the city in these spots as that’s where everyone hangs. I also really love how Downtown LA is growing with Soho Warehouse recently opening there right by the Warner office. I also love Beverly Hills, Westwood and Santa Monica for the same reason, a lot of it is walkable and you get to enjoy the outdoors.

My day to day consists mostly of hanging in the studio which in itself feels like our own private club. My studios have incredible artists, songwriters and producers around on a weekly basis and we often run house parties at or around the sessions. These are some of the best times. Last but not least, I always love going to shoot in and around LA. A lot of the filming spaces are around Downtown LA and the logistic of getting around the city are really fun despite the last minute rush they also bring.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I would like to shoutout my manager Brick Bronson. While a lot of artists and creatives refer to their manager as a regular team member, in my case they are a partner and mentor. Brick has helped me navigate the uncertainty of the music industry when it comes to planning out the coming 10 years of my career.

Through his highly successful experience mixed with an ultra-positive outlook, Brick has helped me break new grounds I couldn’t have imagined crossing before. I’m particularly thankful for the perspective and frame of mind this has helped me develop.
