We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Railla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The first thing I thought about when starting MJR Keeper Academy was that I have a passion for coaching and working with young athletes. I love the game and this is my way of giving back to the goalkeepers that have the same excitement that I did when I was their age. The other side to me starting my coaching business was the freedom and flexibility with my schedule. I can book sessions at any day or time of the week that works for both me and my clients. I get excited every time I work with a new client and starting the process of helping them achieve their goals. There’s no better feeling than a client reporting back to me their successes on the field with their team and hearing about them progress in their career.
What should our readers know about your business?
MJR Keeper Academy is my goalkeeper coaching business where I work with clients one on one to help develop their technical and tactical abilities as a soccer player. What sets me apart from other goalkeeper coaches is that I have the knowledge and expertise to provide top level training and the ability to help young athletes reach their potential. My style of coaching is highly technical and physically demanding, but also focuses on the mental side of being an athlete. I ensure all of my clients are given the tools to overcome all of the mental hurdles that come along with being a goalkeeper.
To get where I am today is through countless hours of studying the game and learning from other coaches to develop my standards as a coach. I invested my time, money, and energy into becoming the best coach that I can be with the purpose of helping young athletes achieve their dreams. In one sense, it was not easy because I had to step outside of my comfort zones to reach this level and dedicate a large portion of my life to it, but on the other hand it was easy because I loved it, even the struggles!
I learned that I can always improve and that being stagnant as a coach will not help me or my clients. I had to commit to adapt to new styles of play, new thoughts on technique, and even learn from my clients. I also learned that giving each client the attention and focus they deserve goes a long way in helping them feel comfortable and heard. The last thing a young athlete wants is a coach that ignores them and makes them feel small. My goal is to uplift them and make them feel like anything is possible.
I want the world to know that I am dedicated to helping all of my clients succeed no matter what their goals are. I will show them the best techniques and tactics for being a goalkeeper as well as help them understand how powerful their mental state of mind can be for them. I want all of my clients to be better than I was as a goalkeeper and to take on any challenges that comes their way.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to shoutout Ian Feuer who helped shape me as not only a great goalkeeper but also coach and mentor. He gave me the tools necessary to understand the psychology of coaching young athletes. Ian was a fantastic mentor who dedicated his time and expertise to not only me, but many other goalkeeper coaches.
