Meet Alexandra Calvo | Owner of NuRevealSkincare

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Calvo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of:
I would say the dangers of synthetic chemicals and fragrances in everyday products. Synthetic fragrances are made from a mixture of chemicals, many of which have been linked to serious health problems like headaches, dizziness, skin irritation, and cancer. I actually wrote an article about this HERE. I designed NuRevealSkincare to not have any of these chemicals or fragrances and I’m crazy about checking labels for fragrances as well.

What was your thought process before starting your own business?
Before I started my skincare line, I was actually working in tech but my passion was melting butters and oils at home, creating creams and serums for myself since my skin was a red mess. I struggled with acne and other skin issues which were embarrassing. I was exhausted using different products and skincare lines which didn’t actually do anything but clutter my bathroom and flare up my sensitive skin.
I liked experimenting with different formulas to see how my skin reacted to each. I also liked knowing exactly what I was putting on my skin which is important since your skin soaks up whatever it comes into contact with. My skin cleared up once I became conscious of what I was putting on it! A bell went off in my head, I’d found my purpose and wanted to share my skincare solutions with just about anyone who would listen. Fast forward to now… the tagline of NuRevealSkincare is “formulated for those who read the back label.”
This line isn’t for the trendy – It’s about clearing up troubled skin and reversing the signs of aging through AHA and other acids.
There is a disconnect in skincare.
Another issue is sustainability and waste. There is a disconnect between brands who claim to care about the environment yet have a ton of packaging. Between 2016 and 2020 there was a 450% increase in Google searches for sustainable products by US consumers.
It was a choice to not have unit boxes to decrease the amount of waste. Every product is packaged in reusable glass bottles and jars. I think it would be great to get rid of all unit boxes so customers can hold the products in their hands and not have to throw away the box the second they get home. Customers like the fact that they aren’t contributing to waste.
We’ve only produced 15 products in 8 years and there’s a reason…
The products we produce take time and thought – Therefore, we focus on fewer products but each pack a punch! It’s not about quantity with our customers. It’s also not about looking a certain way, it’s about you looking better, an improved YOU. I always love getting emails about how using the line cleared up stubborn eczema or how someone isn’t wearing makeup anymore because they feel that they now have nothing to hide!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Laugh Factory or The Comedy Store. I can’t count how many times I’ve been to each. You can sit through 4 hours of comedy, no problem. It’s that fun!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank Cara Treadway, a brand strategist who uplifts eco-friendly, woman-owned and vegan brands.
