We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Goei and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve recently been realizing how much of a role “risk” plays in my life. I start to feel stagnant when my life is too predictable for too long, so it’s almost like I’d rather chase risk than avoid it like most reasonable people. Although I also think pursuing something like art also carries with it inherent risks in many ways. The financial risk is definitely the biggest practical barrier which I still struggle with. But it’s far scarier to risk living my life without going after these things that matter most to me, and truly make me happy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
These days I can’t help but be excited about my artist residency here at AADK Centro Negra in Blanca, Murcia, Spain. I’m on my third and final month as I do this interview, with just 2 weeks left here. It’s my first residency experience and it has been beyond what I could have possibly imagined, being immersed with a group of amazing artist in a remote, rural village in the Ricote Valley of southern Spain, with the simple goal of making art as I see fit in these new surroundings. My work has ventured off into new territory just as I have, and I will carry this inspiration with me for the rest of my life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is an endless trove of rad new spots but some of the places that I consider favorites: Daikokuya, Urth Café, Yamashiro, The Kitchen (in Silver Lake), El Matador beach, Café Tropical, The El Rey, The REDCAT, El Coyote, Santa Barbara, Joshua Tree, Vasquez Rocks, Malibu
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my family, they have been the most supportive of me by far, and I’m really lucky for that. Actually to be a little more specific, I’d like to mention my sisters. Kim and Andrea have both bought paintings from me in the past when they know they could also just ask for them. Of course I’ve given them works also, but they’ve both generously donated to my empty bank account by buying at times when I really needed it. I love my sisters! I’d also like to thank those who donated to support my artist residency here in Spain. Gang!!
