We had the good fortune of connecting with Babyghost and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Babyghost, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think I’ve always been one to think outside the box and push hypotheticals to their starry extremes. I don’t believe in Plan B’s. I believe in music and its power to transcend barriers of language and culture, bringing us together like nothing else. The feeling I get from making and performing music is something that reminds me of home. I keep pursuing music because I long for this kind of familiarity and inspiration I get from telling a story in this medium.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist and human, I am two things: genderless and genreless. I’ve learned not to box myself into any one category or think within limits. Sonically, I was lucky enough to grow up in a musically diverse household enthusiastic about everything from the Blind Boys of Alabama to Jesus Christ Superstar to “Hawaiian Lullabies for the Whole Family.” This eclectic influence is present in my sound and catalogue, which I want to say is full of surprises. In exploring and finding my gender identity, I’ve had the desire to reflect this fluidity in my music as well. I don’t claim one binary gender, and I don’t claim one binary genre. It’s important to explore the fluidity of our true selves!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My ideal day with a friend in the city would start on Mulholland Drive with a sunrise acoustic jam. I love playing guitar up there watching the sun come over the city. Then we’d have to hit the LA Flower Market after a quick stroll up Runyon – can’t miss that experience – and go back to my home base of Glendale for a sandwich lunch from Mario’s deli. The afternoon is my favorite time to (very slowly) skate around Venice and pop into all the kitschy, overpriced head shops and tourist traps, taking in the waves. Once it gets dark, I’d take my friend to West Hollywood for a night of dancing at the bars to finish off a great day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be the musician I am today without the influence and care of so many mentors in my journey. My voice and choral instructors throughout the years (Carol Menke, Melva Wheelwright, Gail Bowers, Joseph Modica) shaped me in immeasurably important ways. As did my acting teachers, who showed me what it was like to truly perform and break out of my comfort zone. I couldn’t tell my stories without the tools to artfully write them, which I was lucky enough to learn from the master Joy Manesiotis herself. For that, I am grateful beyond words.
