We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was in high school, I took photography every year and it was by far my favorite subject. I started assisting for a local photographer and continued to do so through college while earning a business degree. I remember distinctly during one shoot, it hit me. I can make a living doing this?! It was the first time I was really inspired to pursue something as a career. Sitting at a desk from 9 to 5 everyday was never something I saw myself doing. Photography seemed to be the perfect fit. Ironically, not too many years into my career, digital photography really took off and I found myself sitting at a desk editing images much more often than I thought I would.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In the beginning of my career, I was fortunate to be able to assist for different master photographers. I learned from a master studio technician who had a tremendous understanding of light and details. Shortly after that, I started working for another photographer who taught me how to experiment and not be afraid to break a few rules. Integrating these two opposing philosophies into my own style and technique, I’ve learned there’s definitely room for both approaches, sometimes in the same shot.

For over twenty years I focused on commercial and corporate work working for an impressive list of clients. I have always been passionate about the outdoors and nature and over my career have been able to photograph in some of the most spectacular l locations. Over the past several years, I have become more intentional about capturing fine art images planning multiple trips throughout the year to national parks and natural wonders. This has certainly reignited my love of photography.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Vanessa Howard, has been an integral part of my photographic career. We were married in 2001, the same year that I started the business. She worked as a teacher for several years until the photography business was enough to sustain us and we had our daughter, Jessica. Since then, she has taken on a bigger role in the business, helping manage projects, social media, and even photographing events. She’s always by my side as we drive up rough gravel roads or across the desert in search of that perfect photo location!
