We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ PRIMETRAX and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Torrance, CA. I lived there for the first ten years of my life and then I moved to a town in Northern California named Cottonwood, CA – a small town off of the I-5 North Highway. When I was younger I was involved in talent shows, and performing arts projects through school and community. I was also involved in sports, as I have always lived an active lifestyle.

In high school, I decided to join the school choir in my second year in high school. I had a lot of fun with it, and my love for music continued to grow. At this point, I was old enough to realize that being involved with music is something that is important to me. It sounds cliche, but I see music as my safe haven. I am a spiritual person at heart, and music enables me to embody that part of myself individually and collectively.

Participating in choir was a great introduction to theory. Once I finished high school I realized that although I enjoyed choir, I wanted to start learning about, and working with club music and Hip Hop music because I enjoy listening to those styles the most. I grew up mostly consuming those particular genres so those are the genres I was most interested in. After high school I attended the University of Redlands, and I had the opportunity to take this class called The Club (Shoutout Tim Seiber). This class discussed the history, evolution and growth of club music. It was definitely the coolest class I have ever taken. This course influenced me to get into DJing and it has been a fun journey! I

have played in the club, for local concerts, community gatherings, and I participated in the first ever National College DJ competition put on by Upstaged Entertainment Group where I was ranked 21st in the country out of a pool of 100+ DJs who submitted. Since then I am a graduate of Scratch DJ Academy in Los Angeles (Shoutout DJ 4TiFy and DJ Gravity One) and I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Science’s Audio Production Program at the Los Angeles Recording School.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Musically speaking, my mission is to create and develop musical compositions, and or arrangements that enhance any given environment. I see music as a sacred form of energy, and I strive to use it with great purpose and intention in everything I create. I use it to process emotion through sound, curate energy for various social spaces and situations, and to implement into the visual arts as well. I will know that I have achieved my goal of being a versatile artist when my work is being utilized across multiple creative fields.

In terms of where I am at professionally, I am learning and I always will be. I have learned that dissecting the elements of being a professional is similar to peeling the layers of an onion. There are many layers to peel back before you get to the core. Some layers are more challenging to peel back that others, but they all have their own degrees of difficulty, and there is a lesson behind each layer. The best way to overcome the challenges are to experience going through them, or as they say “the best teacher is experience.”

The lessons I have learned a long the way is that you need to be intentional, purposeful, and selective with your work. This applied every aspect of your business – the energy that you put into developing your product, your product itself, the people your partner and share your product with, and being compensated fairly for your services. The quote “your network is your net worth” is 100% true to its meaning. Personally, I am a perfectionist, and one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that I am going to mess up, and that I will not always make the best decisions. All that I can do is stay ready and prepared for any given situation, and continue to learn as I go.

As I continue on my journey, my goals are to continue learning and growing as a person, and as a creative. My growth will present itself through my work because the music is simply there to be created. Music has been such an impactful life force for me, and as an artist all I want to do is reciprocate the energy that music has given me throughout my life. Music is the universal language, and my mission is to use it for the purpose of communicating the thing that I am experiencing in the universe through the sound of music.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, if I had a week, I would probably use it to use each day to explore each area of LA. In West LA you have a beach vibe whereas in Hollywood and DTLA you have more of a busy city/nightlife type of vibe. If I were to pick a favorite place in LA, it would be the Magic Castle, but as you are probably aware, it is an exclusive place. When it comes to trips, I am a go with the flow type of person, so I wouldn’t be the best person to ask for an itinerary.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my mom, dad, and my brother. Shout out to the University of Redlands/My former professor and advisor Tim Seiber, Scratch DJ Academy Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Recording School, and friends and family.
