We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmen Gulotta and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmen, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Your own drive really determines that. 2 people could be faced with the same problems & 1 will overcome. To keep going is to fuel the fire that no matter what, something can be done. I always know to keep going because giving up grants nothing but regret. Even when times are tough and the hole seems impossible to get out of, there is always a tool to pull you back up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography has always been like an art composition to me. I love the way people look in split moments of life. The genuine emotions bring me back to life. When I work with others, I try to preserve the process of becoming friends and having a more personal relationship. I want everyone that works with me to also see me as someone they can talk to, not just about pictures. I’ve been doing photography for 5+ years, I started out living in Hollywood and would just walk the streets for pictures. I also had a neighbor that would let me photograph her from time to time. These were my stepping stones into the industry, I began taking my own pictures using my camera and laptop because I had no one to model for me. This period taught me a lot about photography and myself. It showed me that I don’t need a lot of the resources other photographers have, I just need me and my camera. It wasn’t easy to get to this point, to truly believe I was all I needed but, it was true. I couldn’t rely on anything else but my personality and my camera work to truly get clients. My business/my brand is one that lives off humanity. Through my photography journey I’ve met people from all shades of life and received knowledge from all of them regardless of their status. My brand represents the true, unbiased experience of life while capturing it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok! So first things first, we got to eat on touchdown. I have a delicious pizza parlor called Burratino’s to kick the trip off. The rest of the week would be visiting LA’s known landmarks like the Getty, Griffith, and the La Brea Tar Pits. There’s a bunch of food places to go to like Met her at a Bar for brunch, Veronica’s Kitchen for African cuisine, and Sky’s Tacos for tacos that make you wanna touch the sky haha. The Hauser and Wirth museum is worth a visit, they tend to have complex art that really stimulates the brain. There’s a bunch of clubs to go to as well that have great energy Bootsy Bellows is one, Catch One is another, and Lock & Key. These are all a bunch of fun places to eat and drink and experience the best parts of life. These places give off that vibe like you’re on a whole vacation.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to show my appreciation to the Black Tattoo Experience, they added me to their team in a time I needed one. I’ve been able to travel around with them doing what I love. My mother deserves the upmost credit for encouraging me, encouraging me when nothing around seemed to be working and my own mind was getting to me. Every single person that I have met on my journey I appreciate, I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.
