Meet CusCampbell | Trombonist

We had the good fortune of connecting with CusCampbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CusCampbell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
There was no thought process at the very beginning . As a child, I never thought I was going to be in the position I am currently in. Currently, I understand that a business is nothing more than enough money being made doing a particular activity. I am lucky to have an entrepreneurial mindset. I understand that at this point it is a business and once I got crafty with the multiple revenue streams that exist as a musician, the opportunities were endless.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born in Boston MA. My dad was a college basketball player and rightfully so, wanted my brother and I to follow in his footsteps. My dad always played jazz records around the house. My parents wanted me to play Trumpet or a more popular instrument but I decided to play Trombone to be different. I decided in high school that I wasn’t going to try out for the basketball team but instead, pursue the high school’s top jazz ensemble. Everyone questioned my decision except for my parents. Being from Boston and attending a school like Berklee College of Music is a huge reason I’m in the position I am in today. Most can tell I have synced some of the best things Boston has to offer into my brand.
From the time I was born, music was always in my blood. I was not a good student and I always listened to music in various settings to escape. Once I started playing trombone, I knew I had to make it a popular instrument because no one thought it was cool.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Any place that has great music and a great vibe. I love Sofar Sound shows in unique locations. If the music is good and the vibe is good, its a win win.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my family for not only supporting me but for motivating me. My older brother inspires me with his musical intelligence and way of thinking. My dad inspires me with his work ethic and brutal determination and my mom inspires me with her ability to always get what she wants. I try my best to work hard to represent what it means to be a Campbell.
