We had the good fortune of connecting with Asia Chardonay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asia, how do you think about risk?
I’d say it played huge role considering I currently live the vanlife. [Laughing] Intentionally, I have to add intentionally because in LA it’s not uncommon. And I’m not judging anybody else’s situation, but my situation was a little different. I quit my job in 2019, purchased a van, converted it, all so I could fully focus on my dream of being a comedian. When I first did it, I didn’t look at it as a risk, but something I HAD to do. But looking back, it’s absolutely a risk, and a risk I’m still taking and would take again and again.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart? That’s a good question. With comedy being a male dominated career, and more specifically white male dominated , I think being a black woman in comedy is one thing that sets me apart for sure. I also think just being myself, unapologetically is another.

How did I get where I am today? I haven’t gotten to where I want to be yet, but where I am currently has been a lot of trial and error. A lot of grinding and figuring things out as I go. It definitely hasn’t been easy! And I’m still in that process of learning. Learning the business, learning myself, learning it all. But through it all, I think what’s help me with the different challenges is not giving up. I know that sounds corny as hell, and super cliché, but it’s true. One thing about me, is I’m gonna try! And something as little as trying is and not giving up, to me, is overcoming a challenge on its own. And of course having a bomb ass support system helps with those challenges.

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned and still learning, is trust the process. Don’t get me wrong, I get upset about the “process” and get discouraged about how long this process is taking, but just being faithful and believing that everything I’m doing is going to pay off.

Me pursuing my career is bigger than me. I want the world to know I’m doing this for my people . The support system that has had my back during this process, I’m doing it for them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
[Laughing] This question gives me so much anxiety because I hate when my friends come to town and want me to show them around because my answer is beach, beach, and BEACH. My life revolves around comedy, so I don’t know all of the popping spots that aren’t involving comedy. I’d take them to different comedy spots in LA. Monday the Hollywood Improv for MonDeRays, Tuesday maybe Trippy Tuesdaze at the Sunset rooftop, Wednesday go to Thirdwheel for a fun open mic, of course on Thursday Crack ‘Em Up at the Comedy Store, and the weekend one of my shows or another fellow comedian’s show. I would do the typical LA stuff, take them to the Hollywood walk of fame and show them Hollywood sign, honestly they better google “things to do LA” before they get here because I’m a raggedy tour guide.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, friends, and partner are who I want to dedicate this to! I have been so blessed to have a great support system. I’m not sure what my story would look like if I didn’t have them in my corner.
