We had the good fortune of connecting with Ya K and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ya, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I love taking risks! Big risks bring great rewards and I’m never afraid to learn a lesson; like Steve Harvey said it only takes one hit. People don’t remember you for the misses; the story is only told and glorified for the hits. Professional baseball players get million dollar contracts for hitting 3/10 times and that’s elite on a top tier level. Steph Curry didn’t break his record by making every 3 pointer he attempted. Perfection doesn’t exist in reality.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from other artists is the fact I’m telling my own story. Nothing is fabricated and it’s intimate situations and emotions I go through and share. I got where I’m at today by not caring about anyone’s opinion about me being myself or their opinion on what I go through. It’s easy to tell the truth and be transparent because that’s what I expect in return. I want the world to know that I’m human and I go through things just like the next person and it’s always beauty in ugly moments. Hard times never last forever and it builds character. Never be afraid to tell your story unapologetically. You’re not alone. It’s always about the comeback.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take my people through plenty of areas. All the good food is in South Central in the danger zones. Then hit the sessions for the good weed. Cookies and Med Men are overrated. I’m not paying 79.99 for an eighth they got me F’d up no lie. Check Eventbrite for any parties going on, see if that’s a move on any day. We going to hit the studio get some work done. Hit the beaches, have fun, sight see. Go fishing for some bad jawns you know the vibes. Anything else is just on a whim, we sturdy so it’ll always be a good day as long as the weather is good too.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely shout out my loved one Tyrone Blassingame. He’s been helping me steer away from being in the streets literally and figuratively. If it was up to me I’d be in the mix the wrong way instead of working on music and going to the photoshoots. He opened the doors for me in the modeling and acting field. I always knew I was a sex symbol and I know Prince lives through me. And my loved one Shameka Marie definitely helped me bring a dream to reality as far as songwriting for major artists. That’s been a thrill in itself and it just confirmed my belief in my talent and my own music. I always felt I am elite but I know the world will know it now.
