Meet Jacob Sigman | Singer/Songwriter/Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Sigman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is something that I’ve been thinking a lot more about lately. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for about 6 months now. Moving here definitely felt like a big leap of faith. I had been living in Detroit for 5 years and it really felt like home. The music scene there is eclectic and vibrant but I just didn’t know where I fit in. Then last March my friend asked me to be a featured artist on an album project he was working on in LA. I flew in for the project and ended up meeting the girl who I’m now still dating. Hopeless romantic that I am, within a few months I had packed all my instruments and a few bags of clothes into my Ford Fiesta and drove across the country to Los Angeles.
Now I’m here in LA and it’s lifted my creative ambitions to far greater heights. The amount of talent and drive in this city gives you the feeling that anything is possible and the only limit is your own imagination or daring. Taking risks in my opinion is integral to the duty of an artist. I mean the entire career choice is a risk! At a certain point you just learn to live in it and embrace the unknown.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If there’s one thing I’m excited about, it’s what’s coming next. I think we’ve all caught wind of the headlines around . The live music industry is operating as such a monopoly that it is virtually impossible for independant artists to perform live and not lose money. It’s virtually impossible for independent artists to record an ALBUM and not lose money. Big companies like Ticketmaster are jacking up prices and once you’re cutting in the promoter and the venue you’re lucky if you can afford to buy the band a cheeseburger with the money you take home. So I’m taking matters into my own hands.
I’m launching a live band silent disco concert series. Incredibly talented live musicians performing in public places. This will give us the opportunity to offer affordable tickets and all the money goes to the artist. Instead of grimy clubs we can enjoy the music in the sunshine and everybody can hear the same professional and high fidelity audio that the musicians hear on stage right in their headphones. I want this to be a new artist driven movement to use technology to bring back the magic of live performance and take back the mantle of control from corporate and monopolistic bad actors.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Breakfast at metro cafe for sure, one of my favorite hidden gems. I would want to thrift on the west side at Goodwill and The Council and then go for a walk by the beach or for a hike. There’s always music happening in LA. I’d take them to one of the many dope showcases going on. Melrose market on Sunday is a must as is all you can eat Korean Barbecue and Sushi King, my favorite spot in Santa Monica.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Community is everything in music and the LA scene is maybe the greatest example of that I’ve witnessed. Here in LA everybody you write with, play with, work with wants to come and support you and help however they can. I want to shout this one out to everyone that has been a part of our weekly soup and song share we host at my apartment. I love our LA musical family and I know we’re going to make some crazy art together.
