Meet Chris Fulcher | Creative Director & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Fulcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor I have found throughout the years is keeping my art unique and consistent. Consistency is something I’ve struggled with since the beginning… I’m my own worst enemy sometimes and especially when I first started, I would never want to post 80% of my work because I wasn’t fully happy with it. I would constantly compare myself to other creators, and If I felt like something wasn’t as good as theirs I wouldn’t even advertise my work. We are constantly getting bombarded with new content being posted everyday, so as a creator, if you aren’t advertising your work consistently, you basically get left behind. Keeping my work unique and organic was another huge part of my success as well. Creating photography that I felt true to, and something I was proud of, changed my life and my career. The best feeling in the world was having my clients trust me fully to creating something for them to promote their brand.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So I do all types of content creation but today I wanted to dive a little more into the editorial and commercial photography and video my partner Savannah and I do! For the last 15 years, I’ve dived really deep into music photography. It all started when I was 16 years old and I toured with my friend’s band on Warped Tour. During each city that they would perform, I would network with other bands and see if they wanted to do photoshoots. I used these really cheap lights that I bought (I even had to plug them into a portable generator) and carry them around and offer bands free photoshoots before or after their set. I always wanted to tell a story within my photos. When I started shooting these bands, I would try to make the location and lighting as creative as possible to promote the band in a unique way.
Fast forward to today, we now do primarily album and single covers for artists around the country. How the process works is; we have an artist send us their album or song that they are trying to promote, and we spend a few hours prepping by listening to their music. We think of what type of setting they should be in, or what kind of color palette matches the mood of the music. What should they be holding? What should be in the background? etc.
Having people trust in our process and creativity was the biggest challenge with this type of work. We would tell an artist to get into a swimming pool outside in the middle of January and try to convince them that this is the shot they needed for their album cover. Or maybe we would light something on fire next to them, and the heat from the flames would be uncomfortable. We had some really insane and exaggerated ideas, and most of the time, it was our first time even doing that idea and we weren’t 100% sure how it was going to come out the way we pictured it in our head. With my knowledge of lighting and angles, most the time we pulled it off exactly how we imagined it and gave our client something that they were in love with.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So it would just depend on which city I’m in! I spend primarily my time in 2 states, Nevada (Las Vegas) and Connecticut! If I was in Las Vegas, the options there on fun things to do is endless. Area 15, nightclubs, restaurants, even walking around casino to casino is a fun and free way to check out some amazing things. It’s a shame when Vegas has such a reputation for gambling, because that is such a small part of Las Vegas. There is so much more to do there. I highly recommend anyone to visit, especially if they don’t gamble! Also be sure to check out the surrounding cities in Vegas as well: Summerlin, Henderson, Boulder City etc. There are these pockets of small towns on the outsides of Vegas that offer so much!
If I was in Connecticut, which has less options, I would show them how green it is here. The forests, parks, even cities are SO vibrant during the spring, summer and fall. New Haven, CT is one of my favorites places to go and check out as well. New Haven I spent half of my life working there before moving to the west coast and there are so many cool coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and thrift stores that are unlike any other city in the country!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to everyone that has been rocking with me since the beginning. To my friends that pushed me to create content everyday, and my family for always supporting my decisions on my career. I have the most loving support group around me, and I am so grateful for that
