We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Kenyon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important thing that I have done as a parent to impact my child is probably the inside work that I have done on myself. Before becoming a parent I had a meditation practice and a breathwork practice and thought that I was a peaceful person who knew the way that I wanted to parent. When I had my child I did not keep up my meditation practice or my breathwork practice and all of my “peacefulness” seemed to disappear. I became depressed and didn’t want to live. I got help and that’s when I realized that all of the patterns and behaviors that had been modeled for me by my parents and grandparents were pouring out of me whether I wanted them to or not. Upon realizing this, I started to explore other ways of moving through this world and began to see that I have the ability to break the generational patterns that no longer work for me or my child. I am able to let my child be who he is, dress the way that he wants to dress and discover new things about himself that may not be what I would have chosen for him. I think that is the point, children are already complete human beings when they come into this world and they are the only ones who know what feels good and right for them. It is humanly impossible for me to know what feels good and right for another person.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
UNWIND Mobile Massage & Spa is an extension of the work that I am on this planet to do. The goal is to help people feel good. When I connect spa specialists with people who want our services, I am providing an opportunity for people to feel better. With massage, yoga & joyous dance people often feel better physically. While facials, mani/pedis & henna tend to help people feel better about their appearance. Then there are meditation, tarot readings and sound baths that genuinely leave people feeling better mentally, physically and spiritually.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my gosh, I love this opportunity.

I love good food so I would definitely take my bestie to eat at 401K, Redbird, Post and Beam, Uzumaki, Tsubaki, Milpa Grille, & Holbox. For fun, we would have a beach day in Malibu & a beach day in Venice, go to an Angle City Football Club match, see a performance at The Hollywood Bowl or The Ford Amphitheater as both places have incredible energy from the surrounding mountains, and check out the drum circle on Sunday night at Leimert Park. For relaxation, I love relaxing at home in the back yard and having s’mores with gluten fee grahm crackers and dark chocolate sea salt caramel squares.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a big shoutout to all of the people who loved me when I was not able to love myself. I tried to fit into the mold that I thought other people wanted for me and discovered that I was absolutely miserable and suicidal. I attempted to take my life and I failed. At the time I was not able to see that my living was a good thing, but today I know that it is and that I am meant to be on this earth to help spread love, understanding an acceptance.
