We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalia Ferrara Hendler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalia, what are you inspired by?
As a photographer, I am constantly searching for the inexplicable, extraordinary, and the surreal. My lens seeks to capture the magic that lies hidden beneath the surface of everyday life. I find myself drawn to the mysteries of spirituality and nature, and how we are connected to the grand fabric of the universe.
When I travel, it feels as though I am stepping through portals of discovery, my camera lens is the third eye perspective on the world. But perhaps most of all, it is the power of sensuality that inspires me, and my personal experience of being a woman that ignites a deep sense of self-inquiry.
Through my photography, I seek to uncover the beauty and complexity of the feminine world around me, and to share it with others in all its duality, emotive and creative glory.
I am also highly inspired by other photographers and artists across various mediums who are able to capture the essence of their subjects in unique and captivating ways. My husband Jared Hendler, who goes by Oil and charcoal, galvanizes my creative energy with his painted figures and portraits of immense vibrancy and movement.
The LA based dance company, Jacob Jonas, never fail to evoke intense emotion with their force of spirit and fine art of dance and sound. In the world of photography Nadia Lee Cohen captivates me with her shape-shifting self-portraits, and Sasha Samsonova intrigues with her sensual aesthetic.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My approach to photography is emotive and curious I would say… I’m looking for something that is hidden. I want to create a feeling-state experience rather than a linear story. Visual language and use of body and clothing have always been my preferred ways of communicating and expressing emotion or ideas. Self-portraits are way of self-inquiring and the phasing of physical identity. Am I there when the camera is not looking.
I am a documentary maker by nature. It is more exhilarating and magical to me to capture something fleeting, rather than controlling too much of what is seen. The natural unfold of people, nature and places interests me.
My artistic work aims to express a unique vision that evokes something familiar yet mystical. When it comes to my sensual and feminine work I am investigating the true essence of female sexual energy, and how we can begin to change the societal perspectives around the expression, power and purpose of that energy.
The biggest challenge has been managing a career as a content creator and artistic photographer. To over come this challenge I consciously try to strike a balance between my client work and my art as a photographer. Making space for musing and dreaming is very important in my process.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would begin with my local coffee spots in my area. First up is Bluey’s for Al Salvadorian coffee and a little brunch. Bar Nine is next on my local coffee list. They have a unique way of serving coffee in glass jars and I recommend their in house made hazelnut milk.
Next is a bike ride to Abbot Kinney to muse about stores and the Saturday market Artist and flees.
Down Town LA is a must for Art Galleries like Hauser and Wirth, which is next door one of my favorite restaurants in LA called Manuela. Fahey/Klein gallery is an amazing photography gallery and The Broad art museum is not to be missed.
Night time calls for some live music and dance. Jazz at the vintage bar and former speakeasy Townhouse Venice or The Venice West on Lincoln boulevard for a variety of well known and under ground acts.
Finally I would recommend the Huntington gardens in Pasadena for absolute wonder and a day for day dreams.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this Shoutout to my Husband Jared Hendler.
