We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Funes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
As a creative, art is all about discovering and developing emotions. I create music with the idea that it will construct strong statements and it will make people feel something real, something tangible. Embracing the beauty of chaos, I like to mix different styles and genres. Reason why I like to describe my music as it being inspired by the intricate morphing characteristics of humanity, recognizing elements of versatility, drive, synthesis, and inevitable change. That’s what I believe sets me apart from other composers.
Getting here hasn’t been a walk in the park, that’s for sure. I had to maintain my discipline and hard work to get my foot in the door.
That’s the intricate beauty of hardship – Nothing worth having comes easy, right? Along the way, I learned that you must be flexible and adaptable in this business; but keeping your head high and knowing about what makes you unique, helps that flexibility not affect your essence. Another important recommendation is to build good connections and keep a positive attitude.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting NYC, I would take them to some of my favorite spots for books, coffee, and food.
We’d start with a trip to Dumbo, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods. Perhaps we could check out the thrift shops while we are in Brooklyn and stop for a nice cup of coffee.
Next, we’d spend a day in Central Park. It’s such a beautiful and iconic part of the city, and there’s always something to see or do there.
Afterwards, we could head to the ‘Strand’ Bookstore, which is one of the city’s largest and most iconic bookstores. For a cozier and more eclectic vibe, we could also check out ‘Book Culture’.
If we wanted to check out some live music, we could go to the Lower East Side or check out other areas in the city – there’s always something happening. Thankfully, most of my friends are musicians, so depending on the week; there could also be some smaller shows we could go to.
Overall, NYC has so much to offer and there’s always something new to discover. From cozy coffee shops to fantastic museums and delicious food, there’s never a dull moment in this city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my family, I want to thank them for their constant support and for always being there for me, no matter what. Their love and encouragement have helped me to overcome many obstacles and have given me the courage to pursue my dreams.
To my mentors, I want to express my deepest gratitude for their guidance and wisdom. Their expertise and support have been invaluable to me, and I have learned so much from them over the years. Their belief in my abilities has been a constant source of motivation and has helped me to develop my career as a composer.
And to my friends, I want to thank them for their unconditional support – for being there for me through thick and thin. Their encouragement has been a true blessing in my life, and I am grateful for their presence in my journey.
So, I dedicate my success to my family, mentors, and friends. Without their support, wisdom and encouragement, I would not be where I am today.
