Meet Isaac Rubio | Animator & Story Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Isaac Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isaac, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
The desire to imagine freely and create new worlds has always been in my mind since childhood, and animation became the medium through which I could breathe life into inanimate characters and tell imaginative stories. The art of storytelling allows me to envision worlds where anything is possible. Of course, art comes with its own set of challenges, and it requires using creativity to overcome any situation that arises. The world is rapidly changing with new technologies, and one must adapt to these changes. That’s why I always strive to stay updated with the latest tools to create innovative works. Consequently, my portfolio showcases a wealth of experiences in various art and animation processes. I started as a traditional oil painter, exhibiting in galleries, and gradually ventured into roles such as storyboard artist, character designer, concept artist, 2D animator, 2D effects artist, and presently, a 3D animator. With each new phase, I acquire new tools and software that allow me to apply what I learned. Knowledge and experience are never wasted, and art never dies; it simply transforms.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an animator and artist, I strive to create unique and memorable characters and narratives that resonate with my audience. I specialize in 2D and 3D animation, and I have experience in various areas, from character design and storyboarding to visual effects and concept art.
What makes me stand out is my genuine passion for fusing technical skills with a vivid imagination and a keen understanding of storytelling. I love crafting immersive worlds and captivating characters that leave a lasting impact on my audience.
Getting to where I am today professionally was a challenge. In the beginning, there were limited resources available in my city to learn about animation, so I had to rely on self-teaching and seeking online resources. I encountered numerous challenges and obstacles along the way, but I persevered thanks to my passion and determination.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the significance of staying adaptable and open to learning new techniques and tools. The animation industry is constantly evolving and progressing, so it’s crucial to stay updated with the latest technology and techniques to remain competitive.
I believe that storytelling and art have the power to inspire and bring people together, and it is an honor to be a part of this industry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is a city with so much to offer that it’s difficult to narrow down just a few favorite spots. From the iconic Hollywood sign to the beaches of Santa Monica, there’s something for everyone in this diverse city.
One of my favorite places to visit is Griffith Observatory, which offers stunning views of the city and an opportunity to explore the universe through its exhibits and planetarium shows. It’s a great place to take in the beauty of Los Angeles and to learn something new.
Another must-see spot in LA is the Getty Center, an art museum with an impressive collection of European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, as well as beautiful gardens and views of the city. It’s a peaceful oasis in the midst of a busy city and a great place to spend an afternoon.
For some outdoor fun, I recommend visiting the Santa Monica Pier, which offers classic amusement park rides and games, as well as beautiful views of the ocean and the coastline. It’s a great place to spend a sunny afternoon, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the area for a post-beach drink or dinner.
These are just a few of my favorite spots in LA, but there’s so much more to explore in this vibrant city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I attribute much of my success in animation to my early inspirations, namely Disney and Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli. Disney’s groundbreaking work in animation paved the way for a world of fantasy that has endured for decades, and Miyazaki’s films have captivated me with their beauty and depth of storytelling. Additionally, I draw inspiration from the literature of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his magical realism. While I could name countless other artists and creators who have influenced me throughout my career, these individuals have been my personal inspiration since childhood. I am grateful for their work’s impact on my life and career.
