We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Rothan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think we’ve all heard the phrase, “nothing ventured, nothing gained” and what that doesn’t really address is how scary it is to make changes and take risks. But there is definitely many rewards in pushing yourself to try new things- not only in your business but also in your life. I can’t count how many risks I have taken in my life but I know a huge number of the really fantastic experiences and projects have come from trying something that seemed daunting. From living in Costa Rica to starting my businesses!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So- I do many different things within my field. I tailor wedding gowns and red carpet/ press clothing. I have helped redesign vintage wedding gowns. I have helped several brands develop their designs from an idea in the head, to pattern and completed sample. (Most recently my own line of custom flower girl and special occasion dresses) And I make custom, made to measure clothing. I suppose I am most proud of creating my own path in the world of design and getting to do work that I really love. When I moved to LA I didn’t know anyone, I wasn’t sure what my focus was going to be and it had never occurred to me that every time you see someone on the red carpet, they have been tailored to some degree.
I have learned that the design world is much smaller than you’d think. Having a positive, can-do attitude makes a huge difference.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Drinks at the Tonga Hut Birria from San Marcos
Hike in the Hills (a couple different spots such as Fryman)
Shopping and coffee on Melrose Place
Dumplings in Monterey Park

Not sure these are exciting but I like them

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I absolutely would credit my mentor, Mary Ellen. When I interned in her bridal shop in Columbus, Ohio, I had some sewing experience and I was going to school for Fashion Design but she not only taught me techniques, etc. She trusted me and my design instincts. She is talented, hilarious and patient. I’m honestly not sure if I would be where I am without her.
