We had the good fortune of connecting with PapaJohn Pomar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi PapaJohn, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Laredo a border town in Texas. My upbringing impacted me a lot with how I am today. I have cowboys who work hard everyday very respectful on both sides of my family. I’ve been taught to be respectful chivalrous and treat everyone how I want to be treated. All the lessons I was taught I still believe in and uphold myself to those standards set forth by my parents. Being from a border town I was heavily influenced by my culture. Family has always been a big part of it. As a chicano I have always been taught to work hard and believe in myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is uniquely my own. I bring country elements mixed with my border town raising into my music. I’ve gotten to where I am today simply from not giving up. I was diagnosed with BPD when I was younger. Music has always been the way I’ve expressed myself. It wasn’t easy getting to this level I’m at now I’ve had plenty setback in life but I’ve learned no matter what I go through I can get through as long as I keep my faith and determination. Every thing I do musically is me healing myself through music I write my lyrics expressing my pain frustrations and the good moments. I believe heavily mental health matters and I highlight that in everything I do I love encouraging people and offering advice and support.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely have to go to the lake I love fishing! In Laredo in my opinion the food is unmatched we would definitely be visiting loncheria El Popo, Taco Palenque, and Ringos BBQ. If we were feeling like some drinks we would go to AJ’s bar it’s got a great atmosphere pool tables and live music. I can’t remember the name of the country bar but we would definitely be found there having a few drinks. Downtown Laredo is a must so many local and amazing shops the vibes and people really immerse you in the love of the city

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom definitely deserves the recognition and so much more. She has always been by my side encouraging me and cheering me on. She always made sure I stayed on track even when I was messing up. She never gave up on me. I credit my mom for always making sure I did my best and teaching me to be respectful and holding myself accountable. My mom recently passed away, even though she is gone I still hold her close in my heart and keep pushing myself to be better for me cause I know that’s what she would want me to do. I love you mom
