We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyza Williamson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyza, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ll never forget the day I won the coloring contest in third grade. That’s when I knew that whatever I did I wanted to do something with color display. It was the end of the year and we had a coloring contest that was a competition within the entire class. This included all 20, yes 20 of my classmates. I knew when I seen the paper that was given to us , I was about to Rock it. The Conservation Department was there giving us a spill of how to prevent forest fires. I wasn’t listening at all, I was already planning all my ideas with coloring marking and what colors mashups I was about to use. We had about 30 minutes to complete the assignment. The prize was a golden smokey the bear trophy. The winner of the contest picture would be displayed at the conservation station. Can you imagine the bragging rights? Oh yeah this was in the bag.
I finished early, and when over my highlights and lowlights of the the tree were finished I contemplated it being to much. Like you know would these adults understand my essence of color? My vision? I had actually sought out an opinion of the librarian, which she told me my picture was to busy. She suggested to color over certain parts I had highlighted. I remember thinking is this woman blind? Did she not see the effort of the layout of the tree line? The hard handed pressure and light strokes I used with the Tawny Crayola. The Penny Crayola on the limbs. She literally had no idea.
It took 2 days for the Conservation Department to decide who the winner would be. The same Man that handed out our coloring pages announced the winner. It was ME! Of course it was. I knew it would be. I walked proudly up to accept my award of the same trophy that I had glamorized two days before. The rest is history. That was the day I knew who I was. What I stood for. What inspired me as an artist. That was divergent ways of seeing color and expressing myself diversely through my favorite Crayola Crayons.
Fast forward to 14 years later that’s exactly what I do with color placement now. There are other chemical layers to get the hair without color (Blonde). Then its go time. My favorite part of any service which is formulating the perfect unique color for each client.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The one thing I always hear from my new clients are how do you do this? The question of how is a great deal of hours working tirelessly toward the end goal. There isn’t really any other way. The first step is communication. As a Beauty Professional starting a consult and being able to be a methodical listener is the most efficient way. Inspiration Picture’s of what you like and also looks you don’t will aid in this process.
I primarily do color correction on level 8 and above color clients. Level 8 is a golden blonde and clients seek my services for many different looks. However, the ideal end goal is usually a clean level 10. While it isn’t always possible, I would say about 5% of clients we have to work on a more realistic goal. This requires being able to listen to the wants and needs of the client. This can be achieved by a thorough consult. My consults typically last about 30-55 minutes. We go over everything you can imagine, and some things you would never think of.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Castaway the restaurant in Burbank. The charcuterie board is to die for! The drinks are always so innovative and delicious. Then we could take the canyon out to malibu and chill by the beach for a few hours. We could wait for dinner then stop by Dukes for the sticky short ribs.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The last 14 years I have had the pleasure of working with so many Beauty Professionals. While I’m sitting here thinking one person sticks out. His name is Maurice Cornell. The first day I met him I felt like we didn’t even have to get to know each other. It was as almost he knew exactly how I felt as I was speaking. And I him. We met and worked along side each other in a local salon. I remember thinking the 2nd day we worked together this man was the truth. He had the same work ethic as me. Our passion for creativity and getting to the bag was and is unmatched. He is a light in this dark world. We quickly gravitated to each other. Having the same color theory ideas, while being able to execute our ideas are just a few to name. He was always by myside in down time. And I was always admiring his work. He is an excellent wig maker and his install techniques have ALL celebrity’s and who’s who of Los Angeles coming for his appointments! I am proud to have gotten the chance to work alongside him when I was able to. Our friendship we developed and how seamlessly he integrated into my family as Uncle MoMo is so special to my heart. This shoutout is for him go follow and check him out!
