We had the good fortune of connecting with Belle Chuang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Belle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In late 2022, I quit my full time job to start a home goods brand, called Tuyu Home, with my good friend, Sidney. At the same time, I dove into content creation, something I had always been curious about for a long time. The journey so far has been so fulfilling as I’ve been able to leverage learnings from content creation and launching a business to grow each aspect.
I come from a family of entrepreneurs so I always knew that this was where I’d want to be eventually. I wasn’t sure and am still figuring out if that path is with content creation or with brand building. I’m using my late 20s to explore my passions as much as I can and see where the wind takes me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As I mentioned, I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so always knew that this was a path I would want dive into. Knowing this, I made sure that each step that I’ve taken in my career thus far contributes to this overarching goal.
I started my career in management consulting (my first real job!), where I built my foundation of hard and soft skills, including data analysis, presentation, market research, etc. I loved my job here and learned so much from my peers but ultimately wanted to be closer to the customer.
I transitioned into a market strategy & ops at Curology, a start up that was growing quickly at the time. I learned the ins and outs of a marketing department and saw firsthand what it took to grow a business from 10 to 100. Still, I yearned to be closer to the customer, so made another pivot in product marketing & development. This is where I felt the most inspired and motivated! Day in and day out, I got to gather and listen to customer feedback and make the products that they needed.
Before long, I was recruited to be the Director of Product to oversee the product department of a small, but mighty, women’s wellness company, O Positiv. There, I grew the product portfolio from 2 to 10+ products.
Now, I’ve taken the leap of faith to start my own company, a Asian inspired home goods business, and dip my toes into content creation. What I’ve found most important is having a strong support network that isn’t afraid to tell you the truth. I’ve also learned the importance of putting yourself out there because you never know who you’ll meet that can lift you up.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a proud Asian American from the 626 and a resident of West LA, I’d want to show them all of the good Asian food across LA! We’d start with a food tour in the SGV, with Menya Hanabi, Mama Lu’s dumplings, Golden Deli, Din Tai Fung, and Bopomofo. We’d meander over to Ktown with Sun Nong Dan, Hangari Kalguksu, and drinks from Memory Look. Lastly, we’d head over to Sawtelle in West LA and check out Killer Noodle, Tsujita, Millet Crepe.
For fun, we’d go to Century City mall to dog watch 🙂 and shop around. I’d also take them to south Venice Beach where it’s a bit more secluded and quiet from the main beach stretch.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner! He has been the backbone of my support network. He pushes me to dream bigger, but helps me map out realistic goals so that these dreams are attainable.
