We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Basile and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, what do you attribute your success to?
Courage is the accumulation of small steps and by far, taking small steps is the most important factor behind the success of Go Humphrey. I’ve learned that not all steps require me to move forward. In my life and work, I’ve been consistently challenged with knowing when to take a step back, a side step, or a step forward. Small steps require showing up every day and being consistent which is not the sexiest word, I know. It’s a practical way to work that requires the ability to break down a challenge and focus on one thing at a time. Finding the motivation for each step hasn’t always been easy. Some steps I’ve taken have been months or years apart! Understanding and exploring where I find motivation has helped me along the way and often includes connecting with friends both new and old, travel, nature, and art.
What should our readers know about your business?
In my work, I support a lot of service-based businesses that are either overwhelmed with marketing and communications tasks or have a specific problem they are trying to solve. I work with individuals or teams who do not have full time marketing staff or need additional support and want to take a leap with their business! The way I support this is by mapping out all of the small steps. What sets me apart from the rest is my process. I use the words “good, better, best” when it comes to goal setting and measuring success. With any creative project, challenge, or decision, I often ask “What does good look like? Better? Best?” These three words allow us the opportunity to envision multiple outcomes and roads to take. Procrastination and perfectionism can easily lurk into the creative process, and asking these questions offers a practical way out. Over the years, I’ve developed excellent working relationships with a talented group of creative partners to help execute strategies. Creating dynamic content along with integrating a calendar helps my clients combat that overwhelming feeling and makes the process, dare I say, fun! My love of architecture and design has brought me to work with realtors, interior designers, and architects. Since most my business has developed from referrals, I’ve also worked with creative agencies, e-commerce companies, and wellness providers.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Northeast Los Angeles, and my neighborhood has a small town vibe that I love. When friends visit from another part of the country or LA, I always suggest walking in my neighborhood to appreciate its history and beauty (yes, my neighborhood is walkable!) My favorite spots include the South Pasadena farmers market on Thursdays, hiking to the top of Echo Mountain in Altadena, biking along the Arroyo Seco, admiring all the craftsman bungalows and architecture in the neighborhood, visiting Vidéothèque, a video store with that has rare and hard to find cinema rentals – it’s cleverly organized by directors and actors. For something sweet, there’s Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain which has been around since 1915. Also, I like sharing all the locations featured in films such as Halloween, Back to the Future, and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. One thing missing from my neighborhood is the ocean, so a trip to Will Rogers Beach is always a must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So much of what I learned about storytelling and communication I learned from working in the theatre as an artist and administrator when I lived in New York City. Signature Theatre, LAByrinth Theater, Project Y Theatre, and the New York Neo-Futurists all taught me the value of showing up for myself and others, how to be resourceful, and leading with my heart with every task no matter how small. The spirit of camaraderie and working with an incredibly diverse group of people of all ages, ethnicities, and experiences shaped both my career and life. There was such a generosity of ideas, support, skill-sharing, and encouragement that I aspire to bring with me in every partnership or project that comes my way. I feel so fortunate to have had those opportunities. Participating in a theatrical production either on stage or behind the scenes, offers so many valuable lessons. I encourage it at any age. And of course, Oprah and Dolly Parton! (For obvious reasons that require no explanation).
