We had the good fortune of connecting with Glahnnia Rates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Glahnnia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The Black Community Health & Wellness Association of Nevada (BCHWANV) was born of first-hand experience that there is a pressing need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to address the health challenges faced by black and minority communities in Nevada. The thought-process behind starting this association stemmed from the recognition of two critical factors: the shortcomings of the healthcare system in Nevada and the limited number of supportive holistic programs and resources.

Nevada, like many other regions, has been grappling with a healthcare system that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. Disparities in access to quality healthcare, unequal treatment, and a lack of culturally responsive services have perpetuated health inequities within our community. This glaring issue demanded urgent attention and a concerted effort to effect positive change.

Simultaneously, it became apparent that the existing resources and programs did not always adequately address the unique needs and challenges faced by Black and minority individuals and families in Nevada. A holistic approach encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being was sorely lacking. It was evident that a more comprehensive framework was needed to bridge the gaps in healthcare, advocate for equitable policies, and foster the overall well-being of the community.

Hence, the idea for the Black Community Health & Wellness Association of Nevada was conceived. The association aims to create a collaborative platform where individuals, organizations, and health professionals can come together to address these pressing issues. The overarching goal is to establish a support system that encompasses all aspects of health, from preventive care and education to mental health support and community empowerment.

The thought-process behind the BCHWANV is the belief that collective effort is essential for sustainable change. By bringing together diverse partners, including community leaders, healthcare providers, public health experts, and advocacy organizations, the association aims to amplify the voice and influence of the Black community in shaping healthcare policies and practices.

Furthermore, BCHWANV recognized the significance of holistic approaches to health and wellness. We seek to incorporate culturally appropriate programs and resources that not only address physical health, but also mental, emotional, and social well-being. By adopting a comprehensive perspective, the association aims to foster resilience, empowerment, and overall health improvement within the community.

The establishment of BCHWANV was fueled by a passion for social justice, health equity, and community-driven solutions. We strive to challenge systemic barriers, advocate for policy changes, and ensure that underserved communities in Nevada have access to the quality care and resources they deserve. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, BCHWANV plans to create a brighter future where the health and well-being of the community is prioritized and celebrated.
