Meet The Queen’s Artillery Sandy Clafford | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with The Queen’s Artillery Sandy Clafford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The Queen’s Artillery, why did you pursue a creative career?
Embarking on my artistic journey in my thirties, I rediscovered my innate talent for drawing that had been with me since childhood. However, I had set it aside for a considerable time, prioritizing other aspects of life. It was the realization of constantly sacrificing my own happiness that sparked a pivotal shift in my outlook. I’ve been determined to reclaim autonomy over my future, I made the decision to pursue what truly excites me. Creating became my source of fulfillment, and my life is undergoing transformation since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing myself was a significant challenge for me, as I tend to be introverted and fear rejection. However, one of my proudest moments emerged from this struggle when I had my first solo show. Despite feeling unprepared and grappling with imposter syndrome, I sought guidance from my creative partners Kinna LeBlanc and Shania. They helped me set deadlines, prioritize my work, and provided the encouragement I needed to approach galleries and curators. This experience made me realize that I was my own worst enemy. I understood that rejection is a natural part of this creative journey and that I couldn’t take it personally. The bigger picture was to share my work with the world. If I allowed self-doubt to dominate me, I would never fulfill my purpose or share the gift I’ve been blessed with. It became clear that I needed to overcome my fears and share my unique narrative.
The essence of my brand is rooted in the pursuit of excellence. When I create, I strive to embody the utmost level of my abilities. The hours I dedicate to working are an investment, allowing you to witness the regal essence of the woman behind the artwork. The name “The Queen’s Artillery” reflects this persona, embodying the diverse and boundless mediums I employ in my artistic practice. I want to cultivate an experience that surpasses the ordinary.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Given the chance, I would love to take them on a journey to Costa Rica, a country that holds a deep connection for me as it is my parents’ homeland. Specifically, I would recommend Puerto Viejo de Talamanca as the ideal destination due to Playa Negra and abundance of wildlife. To truly immerse them in the local culture, I would introduce them to one of my favorite dishes called Bochinche Casado, which is steak, seasoned spaghetti, refried black beans, patacones, and salad.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
During my formative years as an artist, SK Artspace played a crucial role in my journey, especially having no prior experience. They provided me with a supportive community, valuable resources, and a network dedicated to nurturing my growth. Additionally, Established Gallery in Brooklyn believed in my talent and granted me the opportunity to showcase my work through my first solo exhibition during Women’s Month in 2023. I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Saundra Heath of Heath Gallery in Harlem, who has served as a trusted mentor and guide over the past two years. I would also like to acknowledge the immense support and advocacy of Demarcus McGaughey, my esteemed colleague in the arts, who consistently mentions me in rooms even when I am not present, and Fable Jones, a collaborator who continues to inspire and challenge me. Lastly, I am eternally grateful to my big sister Donna, who provided me with canvases that had remained untouched for years, and to my closest friends Tanesha, Rasheeda, and Falanni, who believed in and supported me even before I could envision any of this becoming a reality.
