Meet Lizzy Passion | Musician, Mom, & Entertainer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizzy Passion and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizzy Passion, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m certainly not perfect at it, and am often afraid to, but I can say with confidence that the highlights of my life have been the result of me taking risks. All I had ever known was Texas, and at twenty-five years old, I said yes to moving to Malibu, even after laughing off the prospect of doing so initially, and that one decision changed the trajectory of my life entirely. I was afraid to try, and felt hopeless. But when I finally pushed past my insecurity, let go of feeling like I had something to prove, and started saying “yes” to things I never would have before, that’s when my music career shifted for the better. Call it risk-taking, or call it open-mindedness, but my willingness to not operate out of fear has severely impacted the way my life looks now. At the very least, I have a lot more fun, that’s for sure!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most excited about how much fun I’ve had playing music lately. Entertaining a crowd, singing really great songs, and getting rowdy with my friends! Anything beyond that is just a bonus. Getting paid ain’t bad either! Haha The “success” has been the result of hard work and happenstance.
The people I admire most are those who have overcome the greatest of obstacles. I’ve learned that “hope” is worth fighting for, and that losing it will break you. That sometimes you can work as hard as you can at something and still not catch a break. That often things happen when you let go and stop trying so hard. That there is no rhyme or reason to the way things go, and hard work doesn’t always lead to a big grand success story. Hard work is still important, but it’s not a perfect mathematical equation, unfortunately.
As queen Dolly once sang, and these lyrics have since become my daily motto, “yawn and stretch and try to come to life”. A successful day is one where you get up, and you try. No matter if it’s a day that I perform a show, or a day that I’m home doing laundry & keeping two toddlers alive. Every day is a success as long as I’m breathing.
Im so glad I get to be a woman who champions other women, and who hopefully shows my daughters what it looks like to be bold, confident, and kind. I get to sing Dolly, Shania, Miranda, & Carrie regularly, and those songs hit big every time. My hope is to continue adding to the roster of music that is uplifting, empowering, and relatable. I hope I get to keep playing & singing until the Good Lord takes me home!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It would be criminal not to take them to the beach. We’d probably go to Zuma, maybe hike Solstice Canyon, then Malibu Brewing Co. for dinner! Trancas market has their summer concerts, but I’d also take them to Dreamland for a show (the best local music, even if I am a little biased haha). If we wanted to get really crazy, I’d take them dancing at Borderline (maybe an evening at Tarantula Hill so we can have drinks & good food after we dance). Maybe some antique shopping over the hill in Agoura, and the Calabasas farmer’s market never disappoints.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Most who know me have heard me talk about my mom. She died of cancer when I was eighteen years old, and I learned how to sing from her. As a true millennial, I had my heart set on a music career (“following my passion”) and my mom was a realist, encouraging me to find a more practical career. But she showed up for every performance, not matter how embarrassingly awful I was at sixteen years old! Haha I am the musician and the mom I am, no small part thanks to her.
I also had a mentor that said: “there are people with half your talent finding the success you want because they’re working twice as hard as you. If you want to succeed, you need to try”. That single conversation is what I point back to as my “fork in the road” moment.
My friend, Tony, who asked me to play some music with him a while back. Our band, Lizzy Passion & The Cowboy Assassins was born and somehow we get to perform regularly together!
Lastly and most importantly, my husband and two daughters. I can’t even begin to unpack their impact on my life.
