Meet Caroline Cash | Cartoonist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Cash and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caroline, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Drawing comics makes me pretty happy. It’s my favorite thing to do, and it’s really satisfying when I’m finally done with a page or ink a line that has the right line weight.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s pretty silly to be talking about “professional” stuff in indie comics, but I like to think that what sets my work apart from others is my voice. I write and draw my work confidently, and I think that comes across to the reader. Currently, I’m working on my series PeePeePooPoo. It’s a one person anthology series (like a short story collection) and I’m putting out 3 issues a year. The stories are a collection of fictional “auto biographic” comics, gags, genre work, and parodies of famous comics from the past.
My comics path has been straightforward: I had access to an offset printing press for a few years in school so I was able to self publish little mini comics easily. I took these to comic book stores and comic conventions and sold some & gave some away. One of the cartoonists I gave a comic too liked it and thought her friend would like it, her friend worked at Silver Sprocket, they started paying attention to my work and we’d trade comics at comic shows. After a few years of doing this & self publishing my work, they asked me to pitch a book to them. I pitched my first graphic novel Girl in the World to them, and it’s kinda worked out from there. I still self publish, and I work with publishers, it’s a nice balance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Chicago, I’d probably take them to Lula Cafe for breakfast, get hot dogs for lunch, make them dinner and then go to Rainbo Club for $4 drinks afterwards. I’d suggest going to Quimby’s Bookstore and Howling Pages for comics, and I’d recommend Signal Records if they like records. Some other places I’d like to take them would be Immm Rice and Beyond, Music Box Theatre, and Lake Michigan. They’d also have to go to the Bean.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yeah, definitely. I owe a lot to my publisher Silver Sprocket for taking a chance on my work back when I was still in college. Thank you to Avi, Carina, and Ari in particular for all the hard work they put into my books, and the rest of the staff for selling them. Silver Sprocket Rules !!!!!
