We had the good fortune of connecting with Zirao “Zero” Zhang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zirao “Zero”, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Recently, I’ve been thinking about the lack of public awareness regarding the immense effort required to bring a film to life. Both physically and mentally, the process of filmmaking demands tremendous dedication in order to actualize the story that a filmmaker initially envisioned. It’s also a shock to realize that there are far more films in production than what ultimately make it to theaters or streaming platforms. The unfortunate reality is that a significant number of films never receive the opportunity to be showcased to the public.

Now, why is it important for people to be aware of this? I firmly believe that understanding the filmmaking process itself illuminates the value of the messages and ideas that creators strive to convey through their films. Although the film industry is undoubtedly a business, it also serves as a powerful bridge that connects us all. It is a medium through which stories are shared, emotions are evoked, and diverse perspectives are showcased. By recognizing the extraordinary effort that goes into filmmaking, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the art form and the significant role it plays in our lives.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a concept illustrator and production designer, specializing in various projects such as films, TV series, and commercials. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on diverse ventures, channeling my creative abilities. One project that particularly stands out is the Netflix show called Beef, which has garnered immense popularity, holding the esteemed position of #1 on Netflix for quite a while. Witnessing the profound impact it had on the Asian American community fills me with deep satisfaction and gratitude.

Though I still have a long journey ahead, I believe the key to my accomplishments thus far lies in successfully “connecting my dots,” as Steve Jobs said. Drawing from my architectural background, I have acquired a keen sense of design, which serves as the foundation for my work. Additionally, my lifelong passion for films and TV shows has played a pivotal role in shaping my artistic sensibilities. Discovering the realm of production design has been a true revelation, as it seamlessly combines my skills and passions. In essence, my progress can be attributed to a combination of diligent effort, humility, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever I have visitors, Griffith Observatory is my ultimate destination. It offers plenty of captivating hiking trails on Griffith Mountain, making it an ideal spot for overlooking the whole city. To enhance the experience, I recommend playing the enchanting soundtrack of La La Land as driving around the vibrant city of Los Angeles. Additionally, there is a certain romantic allure to cruising along the 405 and 134 freeways during the magical sunset hours, witnessing the city lights come alive in a breathtaking display.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had in the film industry, but it certainly wasn’t easy to get here. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to Suzanne, my instructor at AFI, who not only provided me with invaluable guidance but also recommended me to many of her friends in the industry. Additionally, I want to extend my thanks to all my colleagues whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with on projects like Beef, Magazine Dreams, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses, and more. The love and support I have received from them have been truly overwhelming.
