We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Hudson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anna, how do you think about risk?
Hi! I’ve never been the biggest risk taker in the world. As a kid, I never dreamt of leaving my comfort zone. But as I have grown up, I’ve realized I’ve outgrown my comfort zone and I’m much happier taking risks than ever before. Playing solo shows for the first time and releasing music are two big risks I’ve taken lately as an artist, but they were (and still are) things I wanted to do for myself so I could grow and learn from the experience. Right now, risk taking has a snowball effect on my life. I start small and make tiny steps outside of my comfort zone every day, and over time the steps just get bigger and bigger. Realizing that starting small was all I needed helped me get out of a funk and into my work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career; what can you share with our community?
My name is Anna. I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer currently about to enter my third year at Berklee College of Music. I write lots of songs, I sing, play guitar, and I love producing. I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and my music is heavily shaped by the geography, genres, and life experiences from my home state. Attending a college specifically to pursue music instead of a more stable path was a difficult choice to make. But the gut feeling that I had 3 years ago has proved to be right, and I’m so glad I listened to it. I like where I am now and I love where I’m going. I have been writing and singing my entire life but only recently have I come out of my shell as a solo artist. This is something I have wanted to be since I learned it was possible, and I’m so thankful for the people and opportunities Berklee has presented to me, because without it, I wouldn’t be doing this.
I released my first single, “Scattered Showers”, on March 31, 2023. This by far is my biggest milestone to date as an artist and person, and it is the thing I am the most proud of. Writing a song is one thing, but bringing it to life is another, and I really enjoyed doing this for the first time in a professional setting.
None of this being-an-artist-thing has been easy – not in the slightest. But I would be concerned if it were. The most important thing I’ve learned so far is that my entire career is based on how far out of my comfort zone I’m willing to go. The second-most important thing I’ve learned is how thankful I should be for a job that pushes me to grow and allows me to be paid for it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Because I feel like I have two homes right now, I’ll share some restaurant and activity recommendations for both Winston-Salem and Boston.

Winston-Salem, NC:

-Bagel Station. I grew up on the cheddar bagels here and anyone visiting must try them.
-Chad’s Chai is a local tea brand and they recently opened up a teahouse in downtown W-S that has become my favorite spot.
-Cobblestone Farmers Market is such a lovely thing to do on the weekend; it’s every Saturday morning and full of local vendors and music!

Boston, MA (do keep in mind that I’m not from Boston; I’m just living there currently)

-The Charles River Esplanade is my favorite place in the entire city. It’s so beautiful during spring & fall and I love running there.
-Pavement Coffeehouse is my current favorite place for good matcha and everything bagels.
-Beacon Hill is my favorite neighborhood to explore; every time I go I find something new.
-Citrus and Salt is such a fun restaurant that is definitely worth the hype.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my dear friend Isha Kinare who is (and probably always will be) my number one fan. Your immensely deep love for my music and songwriting makes me so happy. I could have millions of fans one day but none of them would ever be as supportive and dedicated as you are. You are so full of light and kindness and I am so thankful to have you as my friend. <3
