Meet Kalynn Youngblood | Photographer & Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalynn Youngblood and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalynn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to be my own boss and live/work on my own terms. Although, I wasn’t prepared for all the hard word it would include, but I’m glad I made the leap.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Film and photography excite me because I get to create my own narrative through a photo. My motto is documenting black life daily, and I get to do that with every photo I take. Starting off as a hobby and forming into my profession, it was a journey of uncertainty but the reassurance of people around me helped me to see my true potential. Along the way I learned that no one is you. Your eye, and your vision is totally different from any other person, so it doesn’t matter if 1 million people are doing photography as long as you do it your way. My brand is all about recognition. Shining light on those who’ve been looked over and giving them their well deserved attention.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take everyone to Leimert Park. It’s where I grew up and the Mecca of South Central. It’s centrally located to so many things sun the city. We’d go to Black Image Center, visit Simply Wholesome for an amazing smoothie/lunch and go see some black art at a local museum.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Black Image Center is an extremely inspiring non-profit that emphasises on providing black and poc artists with photography tools and information. They are doing exactly what I aspire to do on a bigger platform. They offer fellowships, mentorship’s and more.
