Meet Amber Schnitzius | Ceramic Artist & Owner of Rekindle Pottery

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Schnitzius and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My decision to open my own business was born out of a desire to pursue more creative interests and a longing to escape the exhaustion and burnout I experienced in my corporate job.
Opening an Etsy shop in 2017 marked the beginning of my ceramics side business, and when the opportunity to collaborate with a boutique shop in LA arose in 2018, my venture started to grow. As I juggled both worlds, the strain of my corporate job led to a breaking point, prompting me to reevaluate what was important to me and what I truly wanted in life.
Recognizing the potential in my creative career, I began planning my shift away from the corporate world. Though terrifying, I felt a renewed sense of hope and excitement as I embraced this new direction which was much more aligned with my beliefs and interests. This shift allowed me to nurture and explore my artistic side, leading to pursuits that I knew were essential for my well-being and fulfillment.
Opening my own business was the best next step for me, utilizing the skills and knowledge I gained from my career life and applying them to build a life that prioritizes my growth and joy, both professionally and personally.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a ceramic artist, my work is rooted in my love for nature and fueled by my background in math and science. This unique combination allows me to approach my art with a creative and analytical mindset, constantly seeking innovative solutions to bring my ideas to life, which I think sets me apart from others.
At the core of my artistic mission is a relentless curiosity and determination to overcome limiting beliefs. I believe that art has the power to inspire others to embrace their own curiosities and flourish in new and joyful ways. Through my work, I aspire to ignite a sense of wonder and exploration in those who encounter it, encouraging them to pursue their own creative journeys and grow as individuals.
Recently, I took a leap out of my comfort zone by delving into the creation of larger statement pieces and wall art. This artistic exploration has been both exhilarating and challenging, pushing me to expand my boundaries and refine my techniques. Embracing this new direction has allowed me to unlock fresh artistic possibilities and has been a source of pride and excitement as I stay committed to continually evolve my craft.
My journey to where I am today professionally has been marked by so many challenges. After moving to California, setbacks like a broken kiln and failed plans significantly tested my resolve. However, I persevered, relying on the support of family, friends and mentors. There are so many lessons I have learned along the way and that I continue to learn. Things like the importance of trusting yourself, not being afraid to ask for help and learning to let go when things are out of your control have been recurring themes as I navigate the life of being a full time artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great places to visit in the LA area! Here are some of my favorite things to do with friends who visit from out of town:
The Ferndell hike to Griffith Observatory and a tour of the botanic gardens at Dodger stadium (followed by a baseball game, of course) are great ways to get outside. Taking a ride on the swan boats at Echo Park is also a fun way to spend some time outdoors on a nice day. The Getty Museum is great for exploring art, design and gardens. The Japan House has several exhibits and events throughout the year that are always interesting and beautiful. In the summer, Cinespia hosts movies out on the lawn at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The Last Bookstore not only has books but creative designs and displays as you wander through the different sections. I know it seems cheesy, but the celebrity bus tours are actually fun and it’s a good way to see different parts of the city. Weekend brunch at Escala has a DJ that spins 90’s R&B and has such great vibes to go along with tasty food. And you have to go to Bottega Louie for dessert!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, my family has been my rock. Their belief in me and my creative abilities from the very beginning gave me the courage to take the first steps towards becoming an artist. They have been there through the highs and lows, providing me with unconditional love and support, which continues to be a source of inspiration and strength.
My friends and colleagues have been my biggest cheerleaders, always pushing me to explore new artistic horizons and never doubting my potential. Their enthusiasm for my art has kept me motivated even during times of self-doubt, reminding me of the impact my work has on others.
In moments when I encounter obstacles or find myself second-guessing my path, I draw from the continuous love and encouragement of these incredible people. Their belief in me fuels my determination to overcome any hurdles that come my way, and I am incredibly thankful to have such a loving and supportive network in my life.
My artistic journey is a testament to the power of community and the profound impact that others can have on one’s life. I am humbled and grateful for the people who have played a part in my story, and I credit their influence for where I am today.
