We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Somer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think finding a good work life balance is one of the most important and most challenging things for people to do today. Most people live their lives with a very high stress level. There are high societal expectations on making a lot of money and success, we are constantly reachable and connected through technology, there is lack of clear boundaries, a fear of failure, pressure of perfectionism, and a difficulty prioritizing true personal well-being.

I think that we as women especially need to be better at honoring our needs and desires. If we don’t, it will lead to chronic stress, burnout, compromised physical health, increased risk of mental health issues like anxiety and depression, hormonal imbalances, weakened immune systems, ultimately impacting our overall well-being and quality of life. We need to prioritize living a life where we feel safe and at peace while honoring our wild nature and creativity so that we can flow in alignment. I think we can all be better at prioritizing rest, honoring our cycles, doing what makes us happy, and following our truest desires. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone but ourselves as long as we stay true to our spirit.

I believe we can learn so much about ourselves by simply questioning why we have a hard time finding this balance and discovering where the resistance lies. Is there a pressure of perfectionism, a resistance towards pleasure and receiving, people pleasing, lack of boundaries, fear? Where is there old conditioning blocking you from living the life your truly desire and deserve? We have not been taught that we can do anything we want in this life, that we get to love what we do, and that we can create our life exactly the way that we want. Instead we follow what we think or have been taught that we are “supposed” to do or what life “should” look like. Forget what life looks like – and focus on what life FEELS like. If it doesn’t feel good to you, that’s a reason good enough to change something.

For me, my balance improved when I recognized that I was operating mainly out of my masculine energy and I had this fear of failure if I wasn’t constantly being productive. I believe it’s important to learn that what will bring us the most success is when we follow our truth and what lights us up. I have learned so much about honoring my intuition, my energy, learning about my human design, and how to balance feminine and masculine energetics. I had to learn that doing so, doesn’t take away from my ambition or drive – but it’s about the energy and intention behind it. I get to honor what I’m passionate about and say no to everything that doesn’t feel good or right in my soul. This will keep me in alignment and allow me to actually attract the opportunities and people that are right for me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my career as a personal trainer and nutrition coach in 2017. The month after I started my first job at a corporate gym, my father died. I had to continue to pursue my dreams while going through the most difficult time of my life. This led into the path of meditation and I went to London to become a meditation teacher. I continued to educate myself on the things that I found was extremely important to optimize not only our physical health, but our mental, emotional and spiritual health. I became a certified life coach and combined my knowledge in movement, gut and hormonal health, along with mindfulness, mindset mastery, and most recently somatics and breathwork.

I believe that my broad knowledge and multidimensional approach is what sets me apart from other coaches. I truly believe that everything is connected and my ability to see it from so many different viewpoints, as well as the variety of tools and modalities – makes the support I offer different from anybody else’s. Right now I offer my services mainly through 1;1 coaching and group coaching. I also host retreats around the world, the next one soon to be announced.

What I am most proud of is my own journey, my authenticity and how I have moved through adversity in my life. I did not have examples of what true happiness and success looked like in my family. I lost my father and that side of the family to mental illness and suicide. I started with no money and I moved across the world on my own. I have gone through a lot of loss, healing myself and generational trauma, and built a 6 figure business. I want to show everyone and especially women, that they are worthy of standing in their power and creating everything that they desire and dream of in this life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a weekend in LA I would take my friend to Malibu for a beach day one of the days. My favorite spots are El Matador or Zuma Beach. We would then have lunch on the pier at Malibu Farm and maybe get a surfing lesson or paddle board to do something active. We would stay out there for sunset, go to a winery and have dinner somewhere. A perfect Sunday for me is starting at the Farmers Market, walk around, get my favorite Swedish cinnamon buns at Clark Street, and my favorite coffee at Go Get’em Tiger. We would then have lunch at Great White and then go for a hike at Griffith Park. I would just try to spend as much time possible outside in nature, hikes, waterfalls and beaches.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m grateful for the people that have helped me along the way, that has simply inspired me through what they do and who they are. I’m grateful for all my mentors that I have learned from when it comes to the work that I do. I’m grateful for my friends and my family, especially my mom and grandma who are my biggest supporters. My mom deserves the biggest shoutout, because I simply wouldn’t be the woman I am today without her.

I’m so grateful for all of my clients and the people I have worked with and get to work with, I become a better coach because of them, and in service of others I get so much back myself.

I think it’s so beautiful to think about how one interaction and conversation can change the trajectory of your life. I have so many moments that I can look back on and see how that single moment shifted something, either within myself or my external circumstances. I try to remind myself of this magic as often as I can, and especially when I feel stagnant or going through a hard time. I encourage everyone to do the same.
