We had the good fortune of connecting with Om Bleicher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Om, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk the only way forward into the unknown. The key is to poke around a bit first so its at least and educated risk. But big risks are sometimes needed as well. There is more than one occasion where I’ve had to risk it all to chart the way forward.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
bG Gallery is an outside-the-lines gallery, constantly experimenting with artists that are highly accomplished but overlooked due to there not fitting into a standard art world classification. We have built up a stable of artists and collectors that are mavericks and authentic makers. It was a long road to where we are currently. Beginning by identifying and supporting careers of artists that were left out of the discourse and eventually opening our own space in the recession which allowed us to find good rent and bootstrap our way up. There have been many ups and downs along the way. Buildings selling, collaborators passing away, the art world constantly changing. The most important thing is to be adaptive and to think about collaboration over competition its in the collaborations and the amalgamations that the interesting things happen. That’s the sort of alchemy we like to see in our artists as well. We are currently adapting to a new challenge and activating the community through online activities while in person events are not possible. It is allowing us to travel and meet new people all over the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Jurassic Museum of Technology, Bergamot Station, Hollywood Sculpture Garden, Huntington Gardens is a good start then we would do a little roaming.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to the amazing bG team that have taken on these extraordinary challenges we’ve come across in the pandemic and been very open to sailing the course forward into uncharted territories to find new ways to bring art to people.
