We had the good fortune of connecting with Sonnette Ferrera-Grand and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sonnette, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
A bad-hair-chair is the salon chair where color and cuts gone wrong, go for correction. But I thought what if the bad-hair-chair was reimagined beyond mere correction to seek perfection? This is what Hair By Sonnette calls a transformation chair.

A transformation chair isn’t just for hair gone wrong but for everyone who wants hair transformations… even if you have thinning hair or no hair.

Hair By Sonnette is the rare transformation chair where color and cut corrections and imperfections make transformations daily.

I love beauty transformations of all types. For example, my hobbies are art (painting) and interior design. For me, these design skills help when considering shades of color, textures and shaping for an overall beauty transformation. In the hair world, stylists mostly combine colors and cuts to create results but things get really interesting when you can add hair with extensions, toppers, and wigs.

So, my business is like the triple threat in theatre. But instead of singing, dancing, and acting… I’m coloring, cutting, and creating with all options possible. Instead of a triple threat, it’s a triple treat for my clients.

This approach attracts men and women with many types of hair loss needs: alopecia, cancer, covid, etc., as well as people with medium to full bodied hair.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it comes to working with hair, you need to combine science (color and developer chemistry) with artistry. In other creative arenas, like the winemaking industry, which I’m involved in with my husband, the combination of science and art is referred to as craftsmanship or crafting great wines with a combination of technology and subjective techniques that result in the final blends,

Hair color and cutting can be very technical, even methodical, but even during the most rigorous procedure there is still room to creatively craft an unexpected, astonishing outcome. This happens when when good wines are made in challenging vintages and when clients with severe hair challenges experience joyous emotions when their results exceed their expectations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to send a big Shout Out to Amber O’Hara the owner of Gold and Braid Salons and my team where I share my hair transformation space with at the Gold and Braid salon in Mission Viejo, CA.

Amber has helped me especially with marketing my services. She’s a phenomenal female entrepreneur!
