We had the good fortune of connecting with Omur Ozgur and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omur, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe we should always strive to maintain enough freedom to take risks. When we tie ourselves too much to routines and structures, it often limits the number of risks we’re willing to take. I consistently make an effort to remain free enough to embrace risks. This way, I was able to leave behind a comfortable salary and stability, moving to distant countries to build a new life.

In many aspects of life, we often try to map out our path based on preconceived, foolishly memorized templates. Questions like, “Which house and car should I buy? What profession and career should I pursue? How should I spend time with certain people? What movies should I watch?” Instead of this, the greatest kindness we can do for ourselves is to ask, “How do I feel and what do I want?” These are questions we should ask ourselves repeatedly over the years.

We’re living a life, and the shaping of this life should be a question we direct to ourselves, not to others.

…and yes, taking risks is good… If we are free enough to take those risks.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work as an artist, motion designer, and photographer. After receiving training in Graphic Design, I started working as a motion designer. Additionally, I create art under the name “Atlasbaba.” In my paintings, I blend abstract and street art styles. Apart from this, I also engage in photography. The subjects of my photographs are mostly classic cars. Creativity and ideas, for me, don’t stem from a single field. That’s why creating works in various fields is a separate form of expression and source of enjoyment for me.

A quality within myself that I take pleasure in is having an inquisitive disposition. This enables me to incorporate the question, ‘What else could there be?’ into my life.

By the way, I’d like to mention; if you’re a designer or an artist, your work finds a place in your life instantly. While walking on the street, driving in a car, at the beach, chatting in a group of friends, etc., you’re constantly within the realm of the creative process. What I’m talking about isn’t workaholism. In fact, I believe being a workaholic isn’t a good thing; we need to question that.

You asked about the challenges I faced on the path to professionalism. The biggest challenge was taking the first steps. Because anyone who’s just starting out believes a lot can be accomplished with little knowledge. As you acquire knowledge, you realize there’s no limit to what you can learn. This initial awareness process can be a bit tiring. However, if you can establish a learning and application system, you can receive productive feedback.

A quality in myself that I particularly appreciate is ‘working in an organized and systematic manner.’ Everyone’s path to success is different. However, for the path to be consistent and solid, I prefer to move forward in an organized and systematic way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think the first places I would want to show in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas would be Downtown and Malibu. In Downtown, Burgerlords could be a great lunch alternative. For sunset, I would definitely head to Malibu. I might even drive a bit further north to catch some beautiful views. If we have the time, I would definitely recommend going to the San Francisco area. I truly enjoy its hills and streets. Because you can enter a small street, climb a little uphill, and suddenly be greeted by a stunning ocean and bridge view.

Honestly, I’m not very picky when it comes to food. That’s why I prefer grabbing some small bites to satisfy my hunger and then spending the remaining time exploring the city and its streets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family and friends have always supported me. But the people who inspired me with their support while I pursued my dreams and made them a reality were undoubtedly my biggest motivation.

There are times when things get so tough that you want to crawl into a tiny hole and hide, and everything feels alien to you. It’s precisely in those moments that the help of those who support you by saying, ‘You can do it, everything will fall into place,’ is invaluable. These individuals and their support have varied over time and space. However, when I look back, I can see many people, events, and details that have contributed to the whole. Each of them is crucial in shaping my story. That’s why they are all very important to me, not just one.
