We had the good fortune of connecting with Larry Herweg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Larry, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Playing music became super important to me in my later teen years and into my twenties. Playing drums is such a great physical and mental outlet, you get to be creative while burning off some steam at the same time. Early on I honestly never thought I could make a career out of it. I just made sure I was playing music as much as I could between holding down a retail job and getting my degree in Sociology from University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Once I finished college and as my main band (Pelican) continued to grow, I began to prioritize my drumming career for many years to come. By 2005, Pelican started touring full time and continued to for the next 5 years. I’ve met so many great people over the years of touring. Touring brought me from Chicago to LA in 2006 and helped me decide to pursue a real estate career in 2013. When Pelican switched to a part time touring band, I started a few local bands (San Angelus, Aeges, Intrcptr) to keep busy in the years to come. In 2013 I started working at a real estate office doing property management, while studying for the State Exam. By January 2014 I was a licensed agent and doing real estate sales full time by 2015. That same year I got married and we had our first son. Real estate allows me the flexibility to be my own boss and make my own hours. It also allows me to continue to tour/play music, as I can do a large part of the work remotely. Pelican just wrapped up a back-to-back 3 album reissue campaign through Thrill Jockey Records. We also have a couple cover songs, the first one (Karate’s “Gasoline”) just dropped last week and the next one comes out next month via Numero Group.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been playing drums in bands since the late ‘90’s. My current and longest running band, Pelican, has been at it since 2000 and we spent the years from 2005-2010 touring full time. We still tour a few weeks a year, but we are all older now with careers and families. So we all had to find jobs that would allow us the time and flexibility to still make music and hit the road when time allowed us. I spent many years working retail, but in 2013 I decided to get my real estate license. I’ve been an active sales agent since and currently hang my license at the DPP brokerage. Real estate allows me to be my own boss and provide for my family. Real estate, like the music industry, has its ups and downs but I’ve learned over the years to stay the course and roll with the punches. Hard work pays off and I always try to keep improving in both of my careers. There’s always things to learn with both so they keep me busy. I named my business Four on the Floor Realty as a obvious nod to drumming. I enjoy working with all types of people, but it is especially fun to work with fellow musicians and find them their home and even properties that allow for music studios, etc.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve lived all over LA since 2006, but I moved to Woodland Hills in 2019 when we bought our first home. I love going into Topanga Canyon and hiking at the State Park. After a hike, it’d be nice to take a short drive through the Canyon to the PCH to relax at Topanga Beach. We would grab a Cortado at Blue Bottle, Blinkie’s for an Old Fashioned and Tomato Pie or Endless Color for delicious pizza. We would definitely hit up a Dodgers game, stop by Pro Drum Shop and Amoeba Music in Hollywood as well.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe shoutouts to my wife, my son, my parents and my band mates for years of inspiration, continued support and patience. Also, shoutouts to my current real estate broker DPP and my drum endorsements who’ve supported me over the years; Ludwig Drums, Vater Drumsticks, Paiste Cymbals and Evans Drumheads! Lastly, to my friend Gabe Van who runs his recording studio (Akira Audio) here in Woodland Hills for assisting me with my drum tracking needs!
