Meet Rachel Lipsitz | Music and portrait photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Lipsitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I struggle with this a lot! Well, not really giving up but just what am I doing. I see other people getting way more likes and more work (a lot of mine is unpaid) so it’s hard to know if anyone appreciates it. I guess this is how I know I love it though I do wonder if it all matters from time to time. Sorry, downer answer!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hm not easy but I’ve always struggled with this work being my main job or a side thing and maybe I’m my biggest enemy in this regard because I don’t push it enough. That said, I’m really happy with my work and the progress I’ve made with style and experimenting. I love working with new people and finding locations and what I can get out of it that no one else has. It’s still always fun and always daunting, which I think is a good sign.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Gosh, The Standard Hotel is a fave, the style is stunning – every area is a different look, mostly 60s / 70s and experience is always stellar. It should be pretentious or offputting but I always feel very welcome there and not like I’m somewhere fancy. The Wellcome Collection is my favorite museum. It’s free and always has a really interesting / accessible science-related exhibition. The current one is about milk and is fascinating! Maybe rent a bike if you’re comfortable cycling, it’s a fun way to see Regent’s Park / Hyde park, then you can walk in Soho or Notting Hill. It’s all very close once you’re there. Theater at the National, Barbican, Almeida or Hampstead is guaranteed to be good. Ramo Ramen in my local Kentish Town is really great!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh good question! I guess all the bands that have inspired me since I was a kid (Depeche Mode, Beastie Boys, Elliott Smith, Parquet Courts, Spoon) that have made me fall in love with music and really it’s my biggest obsession that’s really stood the test of time. I should really think of a person though!
