We had the good fortune of connecting with Mckenzie O’Connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mckenzie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I started using art as an outlet for my emotions. A way to visually describe what I am feeling and hopefully, for others to connect and relate. My hope is that when people look at my art, they have a better understanding of what they are feeling.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a visual artist. My favorite medium to use is acrylic. The majority of my commissions is cover art. Every-time I do a cover, I listen to the song over and over while I paint, and really work with the artist so that they can feel the cover fully reflects the emotions in their song. I try to do the same with all my pieces so that it evokes some kind of emotion in the viewer. I got where I am today by following my gut and taking things step by step. It isn’t always easy no, of course I face doubts about myself. It’s just about fighting through that. My brand is about understanding your deepest inner emotions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh Venice Beach for sure. Venice is always full of all kinds of people doing what they love. Rollerblading, surfing, folk dancing, painting, you name it and it’s at Venice. There are also so many independent artists selling their products usually accompanied by live music. Even if you’re not into all that it’s a great place for a beach day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have always loved art, but if it wasn’t for the people I visited my first time in LA, i wouldn’t be where I am today. I met a group of passionate and influential creatives all pursuing there own dream and it just inspired me. Kenji, Buppy, Jordan Everett, Eleanor Kingston, Xedrin, Katy Ferris and Gretta Berline. They made me feel like it was possible when everyone else told me it was impossible. They are what drove me to follow my own dream.
