Meet DAVID SARGSYAN | ACTOR & FILMMAKER

We had the good fortune of connecting with DAVID SARGSYAN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DAVID, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is to become a recognized artist, actor, and filmmaker. Currently, I’m more focused on my acting career, aiming to secure significant roles in major projects. In the realm of acting, my ultimate goal is to become a prominent artist. As I advance in my acting career, I also intend to venture into film production and direction. As a filmmaker, my objective is to create movies that go beyond mere entertainment. I want them to carry meaning and power as pieces of art, leaving a lasting impact on people’s minds. By the end of my career, my professional aim is to be a well-established artist in the film industry.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Since I was a kid, I was involved in art. I was attending a dance academy and a musical school where I studied piano and vocals, but my true passion was the world of film. I always wanted to be an actor, and that passion has been with me always. Later, I got interested in making films too, which eventually led me to study and get a bachelor’s degree in Film and Media Studies at the University of California. I moved to the United States from Armenia when I was 17, and after a while, I decided that it is time to start my acting journey. The first acting job that I got was at the Armenian musical theater located in Glendale, CA. It was a lead role in a musical theater where I embodied Aladdin’s character.
My next big project was on TV. One of the Armenian channels in the USA was starting a big TV series and was doing auditions for lead roles. I was lucky to get the lead role, and basically, my career started with lead roles in theater and TV in the USA Armenian community. My biggest challenge, though, was my English language problem, which I was just studying. This was a big barrier for me to try myself in the American film industry and Hollywood. Eventually, after several years of practice, I started trying myself in American projects.
In recent years, I had several lead roles in short films. For these roles, I received several awards and nominations in film festivals. I also had a chance to work with big stars such as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Bridges… on Hollywood films in some small roles as bit or background. Even though the roles weren’t significant, it was a big experience to work with such big stars and learn from them.
Acting and filmmaking jobs might look easy from the side, but in fact, there is a big work and sacrifice behind it. It takes lots of time, effort, unsuccessful auditions, and no stable income to do what we are passionate about. On my journey, I learned that if you really love what you do, you should continue doing it no matter what.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I live in Glendale, my favorite place to visit for a walk or to relax is “The Americana at Brand.” I also like working at coffee shops, and my favorite place is “Uptown Coffee”, where I always sit to work on scripts or apply for auditions. For fun, I enjoy “Six Flags Magic Mountain” rollercoasters or “K1 Speed” indoor karting. I also appreciate LA beaches, especially Santa Monica.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, the journey we’re on wouldn’t be the same without the help, guidance, and support we’ve received along the way. It’s crucial to recognize and appreciate the people who have made a difference in our lives, no matter how small their contribution may seem. I always keep in mind those who have lent a hand, and even though I don’t want to mention everyone individually, I am deeply thankful for each and every one of them.
I want to give a special shoutout to my family for supporting me on the challenging path I’ve chosen. Their support has been invaluable, and I’m truly grateful for it.
