We had the good fortune of connecting with Britt Fabello and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britt, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Art is an integral part of who I am. It was the only thing that resonated with me when choosing how to spend my days. Through my studio practice, I’m able to release the thoughts and feelings I can’t express with words. I feel most alive when immersed in my artistic groove. It’s a liberating, calming experience that centers me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art revolves significantly around the process. Whether I’m stitching paper or pouring paint onto canvas, my focus lies in the meditative aspects of creation. I want my art practice to slow me down. That sense of emotional connection, and often search for a peaceful state of mind, is felt in the final visuals of the work.

When I’m in my studio, I’m fully immersed in my own realm, translating its essence into my pieces. Lately, I’ve been particularly drawn to mixed media work. Over the past five years, I’ve been sewing into paper, transforming my observations of the world around me into my distinct images. However, I’m currently broadening my horizons. I’m introducing more ink and paint into my creative process, exploring new colors and textures. The moments of experimentation are among my favorite aspects of being an artist.

These exploratory phases have provided me with profound insights into my identity as an artist. They’ve taught me to have confidence in myself and to embrace introspective endeavors. In a world that incessantly bombards us with visual stimuli, how do we quiet those distractions and unearth our personal visions? That’s the introspective digging I’m focused on— letting go and discovering our genuine voice. In the end, it’s about translating that voice into visuals that illuminate the intended message of the artwork.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having just moved to Los Angeles under a year ago, I’m still scoping out the spots and learning the city. But I’ll give you my recommendations so far:

Visit: Griffith Observatory at golden hour and sunset (the lighting makes it feel like pure magic). Head to Malibu for coastal walks and wave-watching (Zuma Beach / Point Dume or Matador State Beach). Go on an architectural tour (Stahl House, Neutra VDL Studio, or The Eames Foundation). Hike in all the surrounding mountains (Sandstone Peak is my top choice right now). Stroll through the gardens at the Huntington Library. Check out Venice to walk the canals or see the talent at the skatepark. Head to Los Feliz and Silver Lake for bookstores, cafés, boutiques, vintage markets. ROW DTLA—another great shopping/eating spot (especially Sundays with Smorgasburg on). And of course, check the local venues for concerts or current exhibits at the art galleries.

Eat (suggestions from a vegetarian): Mouth-watering cheesecake (and really good pizza too) from Ronan. Chutney Pijja or a pasta dish from Pijja Palace. The Vegan Trio from Villa’s Tacos. Casablanca for Moroccan (the vegan tagine has amazing flavor). Crossroads Kitchen—I recently had delicious Cacio e Pepe there. Mother Wolf for more great pasta dishes. Quarter Sheets Pizza—the best pizza I’ve had here yet and some of the best dessert of my life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people who have encouraged me along the way, especially in my moments of uncertainty. I was lucky enough to grow up in an environment that helped foster my creativity and to later have professors who saw my potential (even when I was climbing out the window in the back of the studio classroom to ditch).

But most importantly, I recognize that this journey would have been much more challenging without the support of my husband, Rico. He has been the steady platform to my creative career. Together, we figured out how to establish studio spaces in each of the homes we have shared over the last 10+ years, and how to manage finances during significant creative leaps, such as leaving my graphic design career 5 years ago. He’s been there for every step I’ve taken forward. His love and support run deep. I can’t thank him enough.
