Meet Shayla Williams | Visual Designer and Owner of Shay Design Studio

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shayla Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I founded Shay Design Studio driven by a deep passion for creativity and an unwavering belief in the power of artistic expression, irrespective of an individual’s skill level. My journey began with a simple yet profound aspiration: to offer products and services that inspire and empower people to embrace their inner artist and discover the joy of creating their own works of art.
In a world where self-doubt and perceived limitations often hinder artistic exploration, I envisioned a space where anyone, regardless of their experience or expertise, could feel encouraged to pick up a brush, a pen, or any creative tool and embark on a journey of self-expression. At Shay Design Studio, we champion the idea that creativity knows no bounds and that every individual possesses a unique artistic voice waiting to be heard.
Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment where creativity flourishes, offering a range of products and services carefully designed to support artistic endeavors. Through our offerings, we aim to instill confidence and belief in one’s creative potential, fostering a sense of accomplishment as individuals discover the artist within.
Shay Design Studio is more than a business; it’s a haven for artistic souls, a place where creativity is celebrated and artistic expression is encouraged. Our commitment to this vision remains unwavering, and we look forward to continuing to inspire and empower individuals on their artistic journeys, one stroke at a time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistic journey is deeply rooted in my personal identity as a Black woman, and it is through this unique lens that I interpret and envision the world around me. My art is a reflection of my desire to celebrate diversity and amplify voices that are often underrepresented.
From the very core of my being, I strive to tell stories and depict characters that resonate with the rich tapestry of humanity. My portfolio is a colorful and dynamic mosaic of fictional people of color, brought to life through a diverse range of artistic styles, including traditional, digital, anime, and more.
I believe in the power of art to inspire change and foster inclusivity. To that end, I am passionate about infusing my work with bright, vibrant colors that not only evoke a sense of joy but also serve as a visual representation of the diverse world I wish to see. Through my art, I aim to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and create a sense of belonging for all individuals, regardless of their background.
In addition to celebrating diversity, I embrace a futuristic perspective in my art. I envision a world where progress, innovation, and unity reign supreme. This forward-looking approach allows me to infuse my creations with a sense of hope, inspiring others to imagine and work towards a brighter, more inclusive future.
As I continue to explore new horizons and expand my artistic repertoire, my commitment to championing diversity, brightening the world with vibrant colors, and offering a glimpse into a more harmonious future remains unwavering. Through my art, I hope to not only reflect the world as it should be but also inspire positive change and transformation in the world as it is today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the things that sets Des Moines, IA apart from other towns in Iowa is the artistic scenery. I would first take a person downtown to the sculpture park to explore al the different sculptures creating by some amazing artist.
If we happen to visit the Arts Festival I would walk them around to see all the amazing local and out of site artist.
The next thing I would do is take them to on Local Farmer’s Market over 4 blocks of amazing vendors from all sorts of background and businesses.
After going to the farmer’s market I would take them to Mainframe Studio, a multicolor building downtown that house over a hundred artist studios.
We would then go the the art center and finish are day walking around Grey’s Lake in the evening to see all the amazing colorful lighting.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to first give a shout out to my parents who always encouraged and supported my artistic abilities. Without them I don’t think I would be here today to share my story.
