We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcel Andre and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcel, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
In any career as a production designer and stylist, one of the most hard-hitting lessons I’ve gathered is the absolute necessity of taking risks. Ignoring this can lead you down a road filled with endless pondering over “what could have been.” Let me tell you, working in the gritty film industry is far from a cakewalk. You’re in a constant state of job hunting, the notion of a regular 9-5 job is a unicorn, and your progress often hinges on your connections.

And here’s the real deal: saying “yes” to every opportunity that knocks on your door is a wisdom I’ve acquired through some tough experiences. Sure, there are those moments when you’re bone-tired, you’ve got a trip planned, or you just want to hang out with your friends. But the brutal truth is, when the opportunity shows up, you better grab it with both hands. I still vividly remember the time I got a surprise call from an incredible production designer asking me to hop on board and help set design a stage for a musical artist the very next day. I had just wrapped up an exhausting two-month project, was practically running on fumes, and could use a break from being on another set for a while. But, I’ve seen the game, and I know the hustle, so I said “yes.” And, wouldn’t you know it, that artist turned out to be none other than Nicki Minaj – one of my all-time favorites. It’s a testament to the power of saying “yes” and taking risks.

Heck, I even upped and moved halfway across the globe all by myself at 18 years old to chase my dreams. If I can do it, trust me, anyone can. So, don’t be afraid to say “yes” and roll the dice, because sometimes, those leaps of faith lead to unforgettable experiences and opportunities that change your life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Defining what I do is a bit of a challenge, for I consider myself a creative chameleon navigating the diverse realms of art. In the professional arena, I wear the hats of a production designer and a fashion stylist, with a primary focus on the enchanting world of film and television. However, my journey to this point is a unique one, devoid of a Hollywood upbringing or dreams of becoming the next Spielberg.

Instead, my childhood and early teenage years were a tapestry of Lego-building marathons and elaborate dress-up sessions. Seriously, just ask anyone who knew me back then – constructing and designing consumed my days. I was a ceaseless architect, painter, and craftsman. Okay, maybe I’m guilty of using fancy synonyms for “building,” but the essence is that I was always creating. It was the channel through which my creative energy flowed. Early on, I recognized the power of my personality. I made people laugh, I was a social butterfly, a social aficionado. Growing up as an only child, I learned the value of self-reliance, not to undermine the incredible support from my family and friends, but I understood that to make my dreams a reality, I had to be my own biggest cheerleader.

So, what sets me apart? It’s a mix of unwavering determination, relentless hard work, and yes, a healthy dose of talent. No, that’s not arrogance; it’s acknowledging my own gifts. At just 24, I’ve already lent my production design expertise to four feature films, an entire season of a TV show, over 20 short films, and more than 10 music videos. I also made the bold move of venturing alone to New York City at the tender age of 18, all the way from my little home country, Luxembourg. Were there obstacles? Absolutely. The biggest one is the dilemma of what I’ll eventually wear when I attend the Met Gala haha!

All jokes aside, my hope is that the world perceives me as a unique, one-of-a-kind entity in the artistic realm. There have been moments when people underestimated me, and yes, it can sting a bit. However, what truly matters is the art I produce. Whether you embrace it, understand it, or even dislike it, you can take something away from it. At the end of the day, as long as you’ve had an experience with my work, whether it’s from a film I’ve production designed, through my fashion styling, or any other creative endeavor, I consider my mission accomplished.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you’re hanging out with me, you’re in for a real culinary journey through this city. To kick things off, we’d have to start our day right with a scrumptious brunch at Republique – trust me; their menu is something to write home about. Once we’ve fueled up, it’s time to hit the thrift stores, and I’ve got a soft spot for Crossroads Trading Co. It’s a goldmine of hidden treasures. And, if our adventure falls on a Sunday, you can bet we’ll be at the Melrose Trading Post or The Silverlake Flea Market, soaking up the local vibes and seeking out unique finds. Of course, we might have to embrace a little touristy fun, and that’s where The Grove comes in. I can’t resist a visit to the Farmer’s Market there, and wandering those charming streets, and exploring the stores is always a treat. And yes, I have a not-so-secret love for the Cheesecake Factory – it’s a guilty pleasure. If you’re up for some beach time, Duma is the spot for a relaxed coastal experience. As the sun sets, I love wrapping up our day at a few of my favorite restaurants. Whether it’s the trendy vibes of Laurel Hardware or the seafood delights at Connie & Teds, you can be sure that we’ll be savoring some fantastic flavors. So, get ready for an authentic taste of LA with me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without my mom and dad, there’s simply no version of me. They’re my bedrock, the unwavering support system that’s been by my side through every twist and turn. Words fall short of capturing just how profoundly grateful I am. My mother gifted me with her infectious humor and a wellspring of wisdom about navigating friendships, love, and family dynamics. She instilled in me the art of treating others with kindness and finding the silver lining even in the bleakest of moments. If there’s a beacon of light at the end of any tunnel, it’s my mother, making me burst into laughter. Then there’s my father, the source of what’s arguably my most invaluable trait – good old-fashioned common sense. He underscored the significance of staying grounded, showing respect, and, above all, keeping a level head. If you’re looking for a masterclass in loyalty, look no further than my dad.

While my parents might not be artists in the conventional sense, they took a leap of faith in me and stood firmly behind my career, no matter the financial strain it placed on our family or the geographical distance it created when I ventured out to chase my dreams. Time and time again, they’ve been my steadfast pillars of support. If I had the chance to sing praises for anyone, it would be them. I’d shout it from the tallest peak, from the far reaches of the moon – you name it, I’d do it. Some spend a lifetime in pursuit of happiness; I consider myself blessed to have found mine in them.
