We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawna Christian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawna, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is everything. Life, as well as starting your own business is nothing but risk. When starting Tansy back in 2019, I had previously been at the same place of employment for over 20 years. I loved that job, it afforded me a wonderful life and afforded a comfortable life for my children as well. However, after 20+ years as a creative working in a corporate environment, it was time to risk everything and try something new. I quit my job of the past two decades, put all of my money into starting Tansy, and prayed for the best. After four unbelievably long, but fulfilling and incredible years, it was time to risk everything again, and open a second location in Seattle. Many people will speak to you, as the risk is something you need to be afraid of. As if it has to bring anxiety , dread and fear.. your reality is what you make it, and if you face change head on and approach risk with an open heart and an open mind, you’ll find true passion and true success.

What should our readers know about your business?
Tansy is the only black female owned nursery in Los Angeles County. All plants and home decor items are all handpicked with the utmost care and attention. Our business was started 9 months prior to the pandemic. We were embraced by the community and social media during this time. It has definitely been challenging running a small business in California but it has been completely rewarding. We have learned to trust our instincts, to get over our fear of change and to know that our success is everyone’s success. We would love for the world to know we are here to bring some joy and love into their home with plants and colorful home decor pieces from around the world.

We are a family-owned and operated nursery and home goods store located in Burbank, California as well as Seattle, Washington. We feature a wide array of hand-picked indoor and outdoor plants, as well as a vast selection of art and home goods from all over the globe.

At Tansy, we nurture creativity. We believe every home should inspire joy and reflect the uniqueness within each of us. Let us help you create a magical home full of whimsical and worldly decor, vibrarant colors and lush plant life.

Be inspired by our unique hand-made art. Experience the joy of the natural world. Feel your creative energies flow. Celebrate life and love!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend coming to LA to visit , this is where I would take them: 1. Huntington Library
2. Robinson’s Garden
3. Griffith Observatory
4. Venice Beach
5. Camping at Leo Carillo State Park
6. The Original Pantry
7. Dodger Stadium

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I need to shout out my family, nothing would have been possible without my husband, daughter, and son. They have helped me with Tansy at every step of the way, never missing a beat. Whether I need one of them to come work a shift at the store, create flyers for events, or to Laugh when tensions are high, they are always there to ensure the success of Tansy and me
