We had the good fortune of connecting with Keandra Doss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keandra, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“Fake it until you make it”, This is such trash advice, and doesn’t serve anyone, especially as a business owner. I love that we’re in a time where so many people are encouraged to create businesses and the leverage the online space to do so. Unfortunately, that means more people are consumed with the appearance of success rather than creating something of substance that has real impact or results. It’s okay to not know it all, ask for help, and do it imperfectly.
What should our readers know about your business?
KRD International is a consulting and leadership development firm that partners with organizations that are ready to create a culture centered on wellbeing. The days of “cookie cutter corporate” persona’s, leadership, and expectations are over. We have to humanize the workplace… in fact it’s being demanded as we can see in the current societal shifts. I’m excited that the Black Lives Matter movement, and the current pandemic has ripped the veil off of the economic and racial injustices imbedded in many of our institutions and systems. But I’m also disheartened when I see performative allyship, and lip service among many professionals, and businesses I’ve respected. My specialty remains helping professional women of color actualize their inherent talents, and purpose. Black women continue to be the largest group of entrepreneur’s, and part of this is a response to being done with the unfair expectations, and exhaustion of corporate America. Despite the mass exodus, not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur and they shouldn’t have to be. So the work I’m doing with organizations is to create a better environment where all marginalized groups can bring their talents to an organization and thrive.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I miss Covid Free summers in LA, but we’d have breakfast at the Serving Spoon in Inglewood, have a beach day at Zuma or Bolsa Chica beach for a bonfire, have a spa day at Hugh Spa in Koreatown, have dinner and drinks at Crustacean’s in Beverly Hills, and Dama in Downtown LA. And ideally, we’d go to a concert at Hollywood Bowl.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Wow, there’s so many people I could recognize from family, friends, former colleagues…but I want to dedicate this shout out to Mrs. Oral Brown – Real Estate Titan from Oakland, CA. When I was a little girl, I used to visit Mrs. Brown’s office with my Grandmother while they handled property business. I was in awe of her at 5/6years old, and would tell my Grandmother that I wanted to be like Mrs. Brown when I grew up. She was poised, gracious, smart, well dressed, and ALWAYS told me whatever I pursued I could do it. She even gifted me $1-$2 every time we visited 🙂 She impacted me so much, and helped me believe in what was possible for myself.
