Meet Anna Buksowicz | Film Director & Production Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anna Buksowicz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anna, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Warsaw, Poland. I grew up surrounded by very ambitious, intelligent, and kind people who taught me how to hustle and fight for my dreams. If i didn’t see the hard work my friends and family put into their goals, I don’t think I’d be where I am today. Having a dream is one thing, but you have to make it happen, and I gained that mindset early on.
Growing up in Eastern Europe has definitely shaped my artistic voice – and my thesis film, “Butterfly Boy” highlights that; honest depictions of reality, exploring mixed feelings, wanting to cherish your heritage while moving towards modernity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My thesis film, “Butterfly Boy” is the cultivation of my hard work over the past few years, and specifically the last two in post-graduate film school. It holds my artistic voice and is a reflection of who I am as a writer, film director, and production designer. Every stage of creating this film was eye-opening, even after having made a few shorts already. It was not easy, of course, I don’t think making films will ever be easy – even with a gargantuan budget or distribution deal. Every challenge that I faced during “Butterfly Boy” felt like it was a necessary test of my capabilities as a director and producer, and made me ready for my next projects. Making movies is all about problem-solving. You figure things out. I got incredibly lucky with my cast and crew, who put so much of their time, heart, effort, and resources into this film. I felt incredibly supported throughout the process, which is so important when creating art and being vulnerable. Any problem can be solved with the right people around you!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Academy Museum! Conveniently also right next door to the LACMA and Petersen Automotive Museum. Jon & Vinny’s has the best spicy fusilli, Neptune’s Net in Malibu for seafood, dessert at Bacari in Silver Lake, and La Boheme’s weekend brunch is incredible. Every band has an LA tour date, and you can see a lot of hilarious comedians perform at comedy shows in Hollywood! And go to the beach. Malibu to relax, Venice for fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my lead actors Marek Probosz, Simon Sigal, and Sawyer Maier!
