We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Gay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My inspiration of starting my own business in sexuality education was born (pun intended) from my days of training to be a birth doula. My fascination with the connection to our bodies and the miracles they can perform naturally led me to wanting to support people through the birthing process. As I stepped into this magical role, I quickly realized that I was shocked, not at the birthing process but rather the lack of knowledge surrounding our reproductive systems and how to support them both physically and mentally.

This led me to think about sexuality education as a whole. What has it been teaching us, what is it lacking and how is it evolving to fit into today’s highly charged and rapidly changing sexual landscape? The more people I spoke to around me the more I realized that most everyone I knew was ill educated when it came to their own sexual anatomy, menstruation, sexuality and intimacy, including myself. The need for Sex Ed for Adults, where adults could safely learn and explore a variety of topics and find out what they might need in order to have a fulfilling sex life became my mission. I decided that if I wanted to do this right I were going to have to start my own business. A business where I could educate, share my own personal experiences and show that there is no need for judgment when it comes to understanding who you are sexually. I saw an opportunity to carve out a space in the sexual health and wellness world as an inclusive educator for adults and I ran with it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has just begun and I could not be more excited for what is to come. I look to other educators, therapists and doctors in the sexuality wellness industry as my co-workers and I could not be more proud to be working in a space that is beyond loving and accepting of everyone.

My biggest struggle is having patience with myself because there is SO much work to be done in a niche startup business. Often it feels as if it is two steps forward and three steps back. Owning your own business is challenging, but when I see my clients finally get the sexual life they deserve or work with companies that I have always admired, I know that I am on the right path and doing exactly what I am meant to do. There have been a lot of necessary sacrifices in order to create my own company, but I wake up each day loving what I do. I don’t know how many people are lucky enough to get to say that.

I want the world to know that my brand is one of acceptance. It is a place where you can come and learn about all the things you’ve always wanted to know without feeling judged or shamed. It is an education platform with the offerings of 1-on-1 sessions to talk to me about where your sex life is at and where you want it to go, the options are endless and the discussions are always fun! Through educating and coaching, I am able to help people create a healthy sex positive life in and outside of their relationships. My work is educational, transformative and empowering.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Traveling is one of my favorite parts of life, delving into uncharted destinations, and embracing new experiences. That is why I adore LA, it offers an endless array of fun endeavors. So, if my best friend were to pay a visit, we’d dedicate our week to eating our way through the city. Only stopping for some thrift store explorations, art festivals and farmer’s markets. And, once the weekend rolled around, we’d head to Malibu Creek State Park to camp. Where we would roast marshmallows and wake up to a morning filled with coffee, strolls and drips in the scenic pools.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are SO many people I’d like to extend my gratitude to when it comes to making my business possible. To all of my teachers, mentors, and peers, I am grateful for your help, especially when it came to teaching me how to offer the best version of myself when supporting others. And of course, I can not forget to mention my mom. Whose unwavering love and acceptance has enabled me to maintain the focus needed to pursue my dreams, even when others doubted or questioned my goals. Finally, I owe my business coach and mentor, Nik Rubio, everything. If not for her, I simply would not have a business to even speak of.
