We had the good fortune of connecting with Bess Jane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bess, how does your business help the community?
In response to the challenges posed by the fast fashion industry and the growing need for sustainable alternatives, businesses like Goth Toddler Shop are emerging to provide convenient and eco-friendly solutions. Recognizing that individuals with busy schedules may find it challenging to dedicate time to thrift, such businesses curate collections of second-hand and sustainable clothing options. By offering carefully selected and stylish eco-friendly garments, Goth Toddler Shop aims to make sustainable fashion accessible to those who may not have the time to engage in traditional thrifting. This approach aligns with the broader movement towards responsible consumerism and contributes to the reduction of environmental impact. The convenience of Goth Toddler Shop allows consumers to make ethical choices without compromising their time constraints, fostering a more sustainable approach to dressing for families in today’s fast-paced world. In this way, businesses like Goth Toddler Shop play a vital role in promoting environmental consciousness and responsible consumption (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017).

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Navigating the world as an artist often involves seeking a supplementary career or “day job” to sustain oneself while pursuing creative aspirations. In my high school years, I ventured into the realm of entrepreneurship by launching a small clothing business on the Depop app, initially for enjoyment and some extra income. The pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity for me to delve deeper into the intricacies of vintage clothing and collectibles, culminating in the establishment of my online venture, the “Goth Toddler Shop.” As a self-employed individual, I have found immense value in the flexibility this entrepreneurial path affords, especially as an actor. The ability to craft my own schedule and act as my own boss proves invaluable, ensuring that I can readily accommodate calls to set without forfeiting income due to inflexible work commitments. Recognizing the challenges many face in incorporating sustainable shopping habits, my small business endeavors to address this by offering consumers access to high-quality, affordably priced clothing through a user-friendly online platform. Through this, I aim to contribute to the broader effort of combatting the pervasive issue of fast fashion and promoting a more sustainable and accessible approach to fashion consumption.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Observing the creativity and passion of independent vintage clothing resellers, such as those behind @thrilling, @sarahanneschultz, and others, has been an inspirational journey that ignited my own desire to become a vintage fashion curator. Witnessing their ability to unearth timeless pieces, curate unique collections, and share the stories behind each garment has not only deepened my appreciation for the artistry of fashion but has also stirred a profound interest in preserving and celebrating the heritage embedded in vintage clothing. The commitment of these resellers to sustainable and conscious fashion practices has served as a guiding light, encouraging me to embark on a similar path of curating distinctive and environmentally conscious selections. As I delve into the world of vintage fashion curation, I am motivated by the belief that each piece has a narrative to tell, and through careful curation, I can contribute to the revival of classic styles while promoting ethical and sustainable fashion choices.
