We had the good fortune of connecting with Kotta (Eric) Gorlow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kotta (Eric), how do you think about risk?
I’ve always felt a bit out of touch with the cultural idea of risk. Perhaps “risk” is more of an outside perspective, similar to a judgement. But from the inside, someone doing something “risky” is usually just doing what makes them feel alive or enchanted. I believe most of us can not help but go after the things that have possibilities attached to them, and it seems to me that a “risk” is just a possible way toward a desired outcome. For me, risk is not something that is avoidable, the “risks” that are on my mind are just the directions I have to head to discover what’s behind them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is a bit eclectic, there is big blues inspiration hidden underneath, but by the time a song is produced, it has recently, tended to take from electronic and indie pop or rock sounds that I find interesting, but I certainly put no limit on sources

I recently released a single called “Letter to Father Time (If you Wanna Preach)”. I’m currently working on an album “Is a Friend?” slated for a March release, with a single “Mile a Minute” releasing earlier, in January.

I’m not sure what sets me apart from others, that might be easier for someone to tell me from the outside. In many ways I can’t help who I am, for me the art is a form of discovery, so I hope that each song and project that I do feels as different to the audience as it does to me.

I don’t feel much pride, but I know I get very excited about the idea of finding other musicians and engineers who can help me perform these songs live.

I’m not sure I’ve arrived anywhere professionally, I just know I want to make these songs and perform them live. Every challenge over come, also comes with the reminder that I am still very humble to everything around me. And the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the lessons never stop.

I want to play and connect with others. I don’t have a specific agenda I want to push. I think the things we each discover from music are undefinable, that is why they are so meaningful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are few places that I have found to be truly magical in LA, and although It has more to do with the company I was with than the actual spot, here they are.

Nature:
Franklin Canyon Park
Griffith park (old zoo section)
Leo Carillo Beach (not sure this counts, because it’s a bit out of LA)

Areas:
The Arts District Downtown, (almost everything in this little neighbor hood feels like a dream to me)

restaurants:
Little Pine

entertainment:
Hotel Cafe

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My ma, my pa and my sister. Every bit of playfulness, or expression and meaning that I find in my work stems from them.
