We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Ravassa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think in my 20s I always put my career first, which can sound smart, but it also meant I’d miss out on family events, weddings, fun nights out with friends, etc. I was always waiting tables when people were having fun, or I was preparing auditions and callbacks. I think I’ve learned now that we have to live life fully in order to also get jobs. It seems counter intuitive, but the more we enjoy other activities, continue learning, traveling and growing, the more this will help us in auditions and character development.
And when we aren’t so focused on the outcome of an audition as an actor, we can relax and enjoy the process, and that’s more likely going to flow with the project we are going in for.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For the longest time I thought I belonged doing drama and serious roles on TV. I was swimming upstream fighting for these auditions. When I finally did my sketch comedy web series on YouTube, I discovered my love for comedy and big characters. That helped my understanding of creating characters for animation, using my creativity to invent voices, and think out of the box for fun little characters. Now I live off of voice acting and I love what I do. Being in the booth for animations and video games brings me so much joy. As I get to travel the world and meet fans of the games at comic cons, I like to remind them that what makes us “weird” is what sets us apart and makes us shine. The things that people make fun of us for, as kids, are in the end what we are probably going to stand out doing. So I like to inspire young creators to lean into their weirdness because that’s what will be unique and different. So no, it wasn’t easy for me. But I’m grateful for all the steps along the way because I learned some valuable lessons. Let’s not fit into that box that Hollywood is trying to squeeze us into.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love to rollerblade from Venice to Santa Monica along the bike path! So if ya don’t wanna rollerblade, I’d suggest renting a bike. Then I time it perfectly so that by the time I’m done, I have time to set a blanket down on the beach and watch the sunset. Then I’ll get some tacos for dinner. I also love walking around Silverlake and checking out the farmer’s market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The best dips/hummus/etc are from the Brothers Products!
Some of my favorite restaurants there are Pine & Crane and Bacari:)
On the weekends I’ll hang in Highland Park, close to my home. It’s fun to walk around Figueroa or York and check out the cute little shops. I also hike in Griffith park or out in Altadena.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shout out to Susana Perez with her emBODYment practice. These techniques Susana teaches have really helped me. It’s basically a way to regulate your nervous system and have the mind, body and soul get back to a healthy baseline. The more we live in this world that moves so fast, with social media, travel, online craziness… I feel like anxiety can really start affecting us. I also felt a lot of pressure getting my film produced and out to the world, so learning how to find peace of mind, inner calm and have your body move along with that is really important. I’ve always done yoga but this is a wonderful complement to it. I wish everyone could try her practice because it really gives you a sense of calm on chaotic days.
