We had the good fortune of connecting with Nenney Ochoa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nenney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Since we’ve started working together back in college, I’ve felt that on all sorts of design projects we landed, we always seem to come up with a very interesting mix of results and ideas. And after exploring different professional avenues, Ubaldo Ortiz and myself decided to kickstart nu studio. Our focus is on concept-driven design projects, fully convinced that achieving a unique solution requires the freedom and open communication that can sometimes be challenging in a highly structured organization. But it is precisely pushing against this type of structure, and avoiding hierarchies what allows everyone in a team to contribute equally to the project at hand. We value transparency, we trust our creative instincts and let ourselves be guided by the process.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
The journey hasn’t been easy, that’s for sure. Currently there are many talented people doing amazing things. We too take pride in being a creative force in the world! It might seem mundane, but we try to keep in mind that not everybody that wants to do this type of job on their own terms is able to. So we feel very fortunate to have found a way.

Our business has grown alongside our projects, and if we have achieved new heights or important milestones, we know that is always by allowing ourselves to truly listen to everyone around us and somehow follow our own instinct when the time comes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Monterrey has an incredibly diverse range of scenes, and personally, I’ve been fascinated by how design has started to become a particularly essential part of the entire culinary segment. That’s why I believe I would undoubtedly take a gastronomic tour of the city, from tacos at places like Taquería Orinoco, coffeeshops like Higuera or Casa Benell, to restaurants with very interesting gastronomic proposals like Cara de Vaca, Colmillo, or maybe the small but charming Maverick bar, not forgetting the true traditional tacos at El Primo.

But the coolest thing about Monterrey is its sunsets, thanks to all the mountains we have, it’s possible to see skies of all colors as the sun sets. And you can see them from wherever you are.

Without a doubt, grabbing some elotes in La Huasteca is also a must!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe that, here, the most important thing for me is to be thankful that I met someone just as crazy as I am, someone with whom to undertake this new project, and challenges, someone I can trust blindly. I feel like Ubaldo and I have created an environment, here at nu studio, where we constantly challenge each other and seek to grow and continue to take risks, in order to see where our creativity might take us. This is what keeps our journey truly exciting.

Without a doubt, I must also acknowledge all the support and love we receive from our partners Paola Rivera and Jesús Vergara, who not only inspire us both, but also propel us to unwaveringly pursue our dreams.

And so many of our collaborators and friends, including Alan Ixba, a fantastic creative technologist; the incredibly talented artist and sculptor, Mariana Con Garza; Isabella Carranza, an amazing illustrator and designer; and the uncommonly skilled developer, Javier García. Everyone should definitely check out the awesome work these guys are doing!
