Meet Morgan Swank | Producer, Writer, Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Swank and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When my partner and I created Moonscar Productions, it initially was to make us more credible in producing our own work. Eventually, Moonscar grew to fill the gap where we were seeing a real imbalance with minority content creators and those production crew behind the scenes sharing truly amazing stories but not understanding the machine of Hollywood and how to maneuver. We wanted to be a facilitator between the two worlds and cut the bullshit so to speak. If we could not only provide the resources but also lend a hand to get something made for these underrepresented voices, we were doing our job. Eventually that became Moonscar’s mission and is to this day.

What should our readers know about your business?
Moonscar has always been a labor of love. I think unless you’re already born rich, owning a production company is never going to be a real money maker. We started this company as a need to fill a gap and soothe a lot of our own grievances with an industry that constantly fails us and that has kept us fulfilled and kept Moonscar alive. If I was in it for the money I would have quit and gone to school for finance. I’ve learned a lot in the last 6 years owning this company and, don’t get me wrong, we have pivoted with the market as strikes and the economy have shifted but our goal has always remained the same and we fight for the same voices every day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You’re talking to a homebody who doesn’t leave the house so I’m the wrong person to ask. I always, always have to take my guests to Millie’s and Gracias Madre though! As a non-sports person I think going to a Dodgers game is the most fun and the stadium is so old and beautiful on top of that hill you kind of have to go. The quintessential things to do and see are a show at the Hollywood Bowl and walk up to the observatory even if you’re not a hiker. I don’t drink alcohol anymore so I’m kind of lame and don’t go to bars but I’m happy to buy up a dispensary and sit on a couch and go to sleep before 10pm. I’m in my thirties, okay?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentor in college was a man named Mark Maxwell. He was (and is I believe) an entertainment lawyer, professor at Belmont University and really a wonderful advocate for young professionals in entertainment. He was always willing to lend a hand and provide advice and networking when needed and I’ve taken that to heart my whole adult life. He’s awesome and I’ve always appreciated his guidance.
